The committee met on December 5, 1904, in pursuance of the i above resolution and prepared; . the following memorial to be: * j presented to the General As- j i sembly b}* the county delegation, i j to wit: j Whereas, we believe thatj great injustice has been done by; the pension law to those widows of Confederate soldiers and sailors who have died since the war, inasmuch as they receive *1.-. Maj Harry Ia Hammond, in an article prepared for the Encyclopedia Americana, which article is be- 5 ing sent out by the commissioner Watson, in giving the Y history of manufactures in South Carolina, says: "A cotton factory was established inia ,374 at Murray's Ferry. Williamsburg, and one at States-iv burg a few years later." As c this is the first mention and ear- j liest date of a cotton factory in , c this State, the statement is'rJ equivalent to a positive delara- j e tion that the Murray's Ferry 11 mill was the pioneer in that in-1 e dustry, in which South Carolina jt now leads the entire South and 1 is excelled by only one State in 1 f the Union. r Speaking of the advance in I price of our lands, by the way,! < Cades dirt is not being given h away. Last week Mr C G Cars-, ^ ten bought two acres adjoining i ^ his residence on the South, for ! * which he paid ?1300??050 per ^ acre. The only building on the!* land is a small store house, J which is worth but little. Mr J Carsten is a level-headed man, 1 fully capable of knowing a good 1 thing when he sees it, and the.* fact that he paid such a price, indicates a future for Cades be-1 yond anything that was prom-i ised in the past. In this con- i nection we are reminded that the soil of that neighborhood! seems peculiarly adapted to beans. Why not? 1 i A Kinpstree lady?married j and therefore without ulterior < motive?asked the writer a day j or two ago: "How is it that ', there have been so many mar- ' riages in Lake Uity and yet j they keep right on taking1 place? ; Where do all those marrying j folks come from"? The fact is that the peculiar brand of girls i that Lake City raises on strawberries is so sweet that as fast as they arrive at the age of discretion?and indiscretion?they are simply gobbled up, scooped | in, yet they keep coming on. The supply seems unexhaustible. The possibilities of Wil- 1 liamsburg's soil and climate are < simply beyond imagination,? 1 almost.
