nmmiiM IK ) ! Hi? ADVKf TO FARMERS. Hoiiv i. Dttii Carter Gives Timely Counsel tc Tillers of the Soil. Editor County Record:? As the poli.ieal pot has ceased to tail and all is quiet "along the Potomac", I warn to have a short talk through The Record to my brother i' farmers. First, I wish to say that we are 4" people who are au easy prev for agents of all classes to feed upon. . Now, brothel farmers, sign no uotes offered by ageuts; for any thing that " jon need can be bought for one-half the price the*e agents charge for it. The Bering-machine that they offer for $66 can be bought for $25; the i *' afcel range that they ask from $69 . to $70 for can Ikj bought for $35 to $40. Why theu pay that difference merely because you can buy them "ou time'? If that is it please examine car (fully the notes and papers you are signing and you will find that you are giving iron-clad secuL ritv. If you must have these things you can borrow t he money on the same securi ty aud save fifty per cent, f Take the lightning rod man as he goes to yon and tells you it will cost about thus and so to rod your house and when he gets through it's just ..about double what he said it would be. And just read carefully the note he ask3 you to sign and see what yon are doing. The old adage goes, ''while a man is poor, keep him . poor", and that seems to be the motto of agents generally, but it is - high time that we farmers do pur own thinking and act acordiugly. Well, the year of 1904 is fast drawing to a close and will soon be a thing of the past, and what have we done to better our condition . as farmers? Have we prepared ourselves with better farm implements, stock, etc? ft If not, we are not keeping pace with the other avocations of life. One thing I want to call your attention to: that is, have you got a sab-soil p.ow? If nbt, get one and thoroughly prepare your land before planting your next crop, and I will assure yon that yon will not regret it. When I was a boy and first commenced pi nghing I was told not to turn up the yellow soil, if so it ruined the land; and lots of our farmers still hold to that idea. But experience has taught me differently. Now I ha ve been using one of those plows anc find the result most satisfactory. You can't hurt your land by deep ploughing; on the" contrary, that ja w hat thd laud needs?1 borough breaking of the soil before seeding, then cultivate highly and the yield will be decidedly better. One? when the population of England wiis becoming so dense it was a serious question bow to get a better yield from the soil and iu convention discussing the matter Gladstone used thei-e words: "Plough deeper and make more". This they did and profited accordingly and the same advice will apply , to ns?thoroughly drain your lands, plough deeper, feed your land and % the land will feed you. And now, Mr Editor, lest I amuse come of those old farmers who don't believe ia deep ploughing, down in "Possum Fork", I'll say no more at this time. With best wishes and kindest regarde for you and yonr readers, I P^'am, Respectfully. J. Davib Carter, Leo, S. C. November 25. \ ftrt ?
