SAYINGS AND DOINGS OF PEOPLE
OFQjUK SISTER TOWN.
_
^ DewiC of P- Lodje Hall?An Echo of
the "Race Problem"? Trouble
Caused by Whiskey.
Lake City, November 8:?lb* J
R Brockimon of Dock was lu our
town on Wedueaday last and paid us
a pleasant c?l).
Mayor W W Timinons of Tifton,
Ga., had his handsome residence
burned last Friday by a lire that de
stroyed property worth more than a
quarter of a milliou dollars aud that
kid in ashes a good part of the
flourishing town of Tifton. Mr Timmoos
is well kuown in this section of
Williamsburg and in Floreuce coun
*JMr
Ohn Johnson left here Monday.
He gees to Lamar, where he
has seenred a position in Dr Watsou's
drug store.
J Moultrie Truluck has purchased
the Dewly finished Wester residence
on Jones street, as some call
it. Mr Trtilnck is^a bachelor, but
perhaps this i6 only an investment.
However, things are not always
t what they 6eem.
The Lake City Lodge Knights of
Pythias has purchased a uice lot ou
Main street just below the dwelling
house of Mr J D Daniel. On this
lot the Lodge will build at once, so
-we are informed, a two storied brick
house, the lower story of which will
be fitted up for a store and the upper
for the lodjj* room. The Knights
have long felt their need o: a suitable
home for their order and have
X determined to be wanting no longer.
f Hence this move. It is probable
that the Masons will secure the use
of the hall for their quarters also.
Dr J B DuRant has sold the place
known as the "Byrd place", just below
town, to Mr John M Kennedy.
Mr Simon Poston, that substantial
and straight-forward merchant and
farmer of Half Moon was noted here
Friday.
We noted :hat splendid citizen Mi
W S Eaddy of Prospect in town Saturday
last.
The New Zion school was opened
Monday, Miss Lena Thomas in
charge.

of Cades was in our midst one day
last week on business.
Mr J J M Graham came up from
Cades Wednesday to receive a consignment
of three-yaar.old papei
shell giant pecans. He will put twc
acres in these nuts at once aud add
to this from time to time. This is
exactly in the right directijn. Il
has been demonstrated the South
Carolina produces the finest ]>ecans
grown in the United States; and, affew
years of necessary wait]
ing, the crop is a sure and profitable
I one. We beleive it a good indication
J when our people go to putting out
I nnt and fruit, trees.
Sam Siugietary, colored, who is
charged with having beaten and
si choked a little white boy near Han*
na, Florence county, more than a
year ago, was arrested here Saturday
by Marshal Cole and placed in the
savings department of the guard
boose. Sheriff Burch came down
Sunday and carried the prisoner to
rwrencej^miiuav nignr ai tgietary
had been in hilling since the crime
was committed and felt that he
could come here in safety, but found
this a mistake.
There was quite a crowd in town
Saturday and some of the crowd,
after "crowding down" more of that
which is disp osed from the State's
whiskey shop than they could contain
without losing their equanmity
and equilibrium, proceeded to
dispense much noise, recless driving
and large "cuss worcta". Two white
men were salted down in toe refrigerator
and allowed to cool off. Another,
who wtis pretty fall, managed
to keep from being "polled" and got
ont of town, but when a few miles
away the liquor could not longer resist
the temptation to get bim in
trouble, and he tried to empty a load
nf inf/> annt.hftr man. who fnr
tunatelj knocked the barrel of the
gnn wide just as it was discharged.
Had not this second mau been cool,
and collected, it is probable that we
would bewailed upon to chronicle a
horrible Jaomtcide instead of an assault.
Messrs J H Blackwell, P G Gourdin
and J H Y Gaskins, of the board
of control, checked up Dispenser
.Rogers Tuesday.
We continue to hear of negro
clubs In all sections of the county.
As to the object there are more than
one rumor. If these negroes are
meeting together for the purpose of
benefiting the race in an honest and
legitimate way, well and good. If
not, tbeu thev are foolish and will
finally learn that this is trrr. .V
any rate, the whites shoui.' i
