Th? Question of Lights,
The-argument of our Lake City
correspondent in favor of better
tights for that thriving municipality
applies with equal force to our
town, and we commend to the citizens
of Kingstree his suggestion as to
oHdfetric lights. It is a notable fact
that shice the world's beginning
men have sought the cover of darkness
to do their deeds of evil. Bnrglarvvrobberv
and arson?three crimes
dosely connected?are seldom or
never committed in daylight or on
streets lighted by electricity.
Ia this connection it occurs to us
that some months ago, as the story
goes, safe robbers visited visited a
? certain town in the Pee Dee section
intending to rob the bank, but finding
the building flooded with brilliance
from a Dear by arc-light, they {
changed their plans and went to
nether town some miles distant
where the darkness was accentuated
by grimy kerosene "lights". Here
r they found no difficulty in carrying
at their purpose aud next morning
the people awoke in wide-eyed wonder
to find that some hundreds of
money had been stolen from
their midst.
The lights of Kingstree are al
most as bad as none at all. The
town may not be able to afford electricity
jnst now but certainly there
could be made some improvement on
the.present system. Sometimes on
the darkest nights there is not a sin- i
gle'lamp burning on either of our
principal streets. With this state of
things it is not strange that robberies
are frequent aud other acts of
lawlessness committed that go un'
punished. .

| The Case of Hoyt Hayes.
Governor Hey ward has commutted
to life imprisonment the sentence of
^JEoyt Hayes, who was to have been
kangeu in Oconee county last Friday
for the crime of killing his wife.
The governor's reason for interfering
was based principally on the opiniou
of a hand-writing expert that a certain
note signed by Mrs Hayes, in
whichshe signified her intention to
ommit suicide, was genuine and
not a forgery as was contended by
the prosecution.
As it appears to us Governor Keyword's
action in the case was ill-ad^
*ised. Either Hayes is guilty or
innocent. If guilty he certainly deserved
to be hanged, and if innocent
he ought not to be punished at all.
The course pursued by the governor
seems to indicate a desire to ''keep
ia" with both sides?the friends of
the conclemmed man by sparing his
life, and at the same time to throw
a sop to those who believe hiro guilty
by imprisoning him for life. If
it be practicable we think the suggestion
offered by the News and
Courier a good one, viz., to stud the
case back to the circuit court and
let the exp.rt give his testimony.
Ii*en let the jury decide what bear*
ing it may have in determining the
guilt or innocence of Hayes. Already
it is freely asserted that in
South Carolina a white man caunot
be legally hanged, and the outcome
of the case of Hoyt Hayes is not calculated
to disabuse people's minds
of that opinion.
