Before and After.
"Dear Bill," wrote the candidate t(
his brother in Texas, "I write tc
say that I am gettiug up among tht
photographs. I am running foi
clerk, and the boys say I will win
bauds down. There is no way tc
beat me. Fifteen hundred men
have pledged me their support personally,
and there will be only 2*200
votes in the couuty. So you sec
my majority won't only be handsome
but Overwhelming. Old Williams
burg county is all right, and the fellow
who cau't 'raise' in this neck of
the moral vineyard has absolutely
no 'yeast' in his anatomy. I am
writing this on the eve of the elec
tioa and er? these lines reach you
I will be clerk of the grand old
county of Williamsburg. Bill, if
you are needing anything in the
shape of financial assistance, don't
fail to call ou your devoted bother,
John'."
"Dear Bill," wrote John a few
days after the foregoing epistle was
penned, "you may consider this a repudiation
of my former letter in
reference to my race for clerk. M y
opponent, that red-headed, freckledface
hyena of a Henry Peters?you
remember him?beat the socks off
* me.
- "I have come to the conclusion,
Bill, that King David didn't go far
* ' " enough when he wrote, "I said in my
hlste that all men are liars." He
shouk^/have added 'and since I have
thought the matter over, I have
nothing to take back.'
"IfT know anything, it is this:
* that Williamsburg county contains
fifteen .hundred of as robust, ablebodied
liars as yon can find in the
whole StAtoof South Carolina. Bill,
I want to ask a favor of you, and to
cut it short, I'm financially dead and
the ?ulture8_of bankruptcy are after
me. I waot to borrow a hundred until
I can make my crop. And, Bill,
if you ever come back home on a visit
I'll consider tea mighty big favor if
you won't tell'tfiH. boys about that
first letter regarding my candidacy.
On account of .the aforesaid fifteen
hundred able-bodied liars, I humbly
inscribe myself, your necessarily
hacked but still game brother,
"John."

Cards of ThanksKindly
allow me the use of your
columns to return my heartfelt
? thanks to. my friends for their loyal
support in the recent election and to
express the hope that they will turn
out at the polls in the second primary
in my behalf. If re-elected I
shall continue to use my best efforts
to give faithful service and especially
to build up the roads over the whole
* county. With the facilities at hand
and the experience I have gained I
feel coufident in saying that in two
years more I could do a great deal
toward the improvement of our public
roads, should I be allowed the opportunity
to carry out the plans I
have formed toward this end.
Respectfully,
John J Gkaham.

My Fellow-citizens: I feel that

Wheu I lock the mail sacks and deliver
