DEATH OF MISS DUKE. One of Gainesville's Sweetest Young Ladies Passes Away. ? While the sad message was 110 sur -prise to the people of Gainesville, nevertheless the information of the death of Miss Maude, the youngest daughter of .Mr and Mrs Samuel V Duke, who departed this life about 4 o'clock Thursday morning, came as a shock. Deceased 'was in her nineteenth year. Having been born and reared here, she had endeared herself by her sweet, amiable end generous disposition to a large circle of friends who learned to love her for her goodness. About six weeks ago deceased, accomjnm'ed II P Langlev a life-long friend of the family, to his summer K?..w. I.. i t 1. V II JiVMWV ill xi* xx.; u ii\iv intended to remain until autumn. At the time of her departure her cheeks were glowing with a happv; healthy Oliinson, and a most enjoyable summer outing was anticipated. But i-lie had been absent only a little while when the parents received a telegram announcing her serious illness, and immediately proceeded to the little New Hampshire town. They were gratified, however, to find the condition of the patient somewhat improved, and as soon as they concluded it was safe to travel, the young lady accompanied her parents home. For a few days after arriving here her condition seemed favorable, but uufortuuately a relapse came, and the situation gradually j became more critical, with the result that death came to relieve her of her sufferings Thursday. She diad of heart disease. Notwithstanding everything possible that loving hands! and skilled physicians could i o for; her relief, they were without avail, aud the patient sweetly and patiently succumbed to the enevitable. At the hour of her death she was surrounded by members of the family, relatives and r few friends.?Ciainesville (Kla.) Sun?August 12. a. tara. Editor Horry Herald, Conway, S. 0. 1 haidly ever have anything to j say for publication as you have aj live correspondent here. The with-! drawn! of Congressman Scarborough j is get erally regretted and there would have been no doubt of his ] election by a large majority. It. seems that a good many people here i think that Mi Ellerbe should repre-j sent us in congress. I have given! the matter some thought and with ' the piesent light before me, I shall give the Hon J W Kagsdule of Florence my support and influence, be-, lieving that he will win. Mr Hagsdale's record in the Legislature should recommend him to the fa* Vorable consideration of the voters of the district. He came j to Horry a perfect stranger, but his speech in Conwav made him many vot^s. No one doubts bis ability or integrity as he was iniatnuuously endorsed for Congress by his county convention. He is an .^eloquent, earnest .and forceful speaker and fully competent to defend the rights of the common j>eople in Congress. I am glad 'o know thetsuch prominent men in old Horry an our worthy senator, II'-a Geo J Hollidav, Judge 11 N Sessoms and the lion J A HcDermott are supporting Senator Ragsdale for our next congressman. As I see tbe situation he is bound to win. \V. L. SlXUI.ETOX. Toddvilie, S. C. College of Charleston, CHARLESTON, S. C119th Year Begins September 30. Lettcrs/Scienoe, Engineering.
