The Keowee Courier, published in
Oconee county, takes The Record
to task on account of a paragraph
that appeared in this column recently
itating that Hoyt Hayes,
the young man who was recently
I
condemned to death in Oconee for
killing his wife, had escaped from
the coun ty jail. The writej of the
quib referred to doubtless had in
mind the case of Adams, the Colleton
murderer, who while confined in
Walterboro jail pending the execution
of the death sentence, succeeded
K i
in making his escape and is still at
large. On behalf of the writer of
the offer ding paragraph we beg forgiveness
on the part of the esteemed
Conner, Sheriff Moss and all others
who deem themselves in way
wronged.. Moreov er, we assure them i
that we are not prejudiced against
V-.. Haynes, the alleged murderer, but if
he be guilty, as the law says he isv
we are glad to know that he has not
escaped, but is still in the custody
of a "conscientious sheriff, who is
x striving to do hit duty", and whose
duty will be ended on a certain fatal
Friday, save only by the interference
of the Governor, who, we do not believe,
will grant a reprieve when the
verdict of the circuit court has been
affirmed by the State's highest tri v
banal.

Some Seasons Why the Hon. James

for Congress.

He ? the best equipped man for
tbe du ties of a Congressman in the

of law and constitutional
governnnent equal to either candidate
in the field. Broad experience
in couuty, state and national affairs
and with tbat experience he possesses
a robust manhood and abilities equal
to the best of the aspirants. A
Confederate soldier of four years'

honors for these services. All
things equal, it should have weight
Several times wounded?once seriously.
Not another old soldier in the
race in the State. Not one in State
office except Jennings. He has helped
more old soldiers since the war
than most men. A man of tbe people
and a friend to the laborer.
Himself raised to work?great
energy and tactful persistence.
Devoted to the public good, especially
so as a public official. His record
as school commissioner of his native
count'? excelled bj none?a friend of
education. Watchful and zealous
member of the State Legislature,
opposed to all extravagance in public
affair; and progressive in his ideas of
the development of every interist of

As Comptroller General of South
Carol .na, he displayed great executive
and administrative abilities in the
management of the most important

building there are due to his efforts
and work. The boys in the Spanish American
war received more active
aid and after positions through Mr.
Norton than many Congressmen.
A man of less tactful persistence and
skillful entreaty might not have secured
the reopening of the Lake
City post office when it was done,
and uuder such disadvantages.
In this community, Mr. Norton
is a real public benefactor* The
amount of work done gratuitously is
marvelous. Church, Sunday school,
town and commnnity feel the beneficial
results of his works. Any way
to help others. His life and energies
belong almost literally to the public
good about him.
In Columbia, when Comptroller
General, ibstead of banquet halls
and restfnl pleasures, he built up a
fine school among the people of a
missionary church. In Washington,
his record is as good?consistent

' These facta?this lite too, shows
why the neighbors of Mr. Norton
always practically support him
unanimously for anything asked for.
See results from two , electionsothers
same.
In 1897 for Congress, fire men
from his connty entered the race. At
Mullins the four received 68 votes
and Norton 398 (from memory.)
The four meu were strong and
popular citizens. In 1900, last vote,
Norton 488 and opponent also raised
ia Mulhns 90 votes. His life among
these good people and his work for
them and known to them accounts
for their devotion to him. A record
and facts that any man should be
proud of and as honorable as even
going to Congress.
A farmer himself, Mr. Norton is
directly interested in the agricultural
development of this section, no less
than he is in the commercial pro
gress of this people. Georgetown
harbor and rivers tributary would
command his best talents and efforts
for proper appropriations. The industrial
interests of the sixth district
have and would receive every
aid and encouragement at his hauds.
Mails in' town and country would
not suffer any detriment from his
helpful touch and sagacious aid.
As a grower of tobacco, he knows,
where the shoe pinches in this industry.
Necessarily he would strive
to relieve these pinches, How?

Diplomacy and not legislation

legislation might change.
English leaf tax is-- 70 odd cents,

something may be attempted.
Mr. Norton's great knowledge of3

a characteristic of oar neighbor in
pablic life or oat ot it.
Not 'iwibly wobly" on all sides of
all questions to get there right or
wrong, but a man who scorns canting
hypocricy and sham.
This man above described has
been as faithful and trne to the
county, state and district as to the
people of the Mullins community.
Any man in the district, however
humble and poor; can approach him
and will receive the same courteous
attention and consideration given
the strongest and richest.
Tn Washington the citizens of the
sixth district of South Carolina
always found ready friends who
would at midnight, as well as by
daylight, chearfully attend to any
business or interest possible for rich
or poor. Even now appeals come to
him from other counties for aid in
better mail facilities in their communities.
Confidence is a plant of slow
growth, but gradually the real
character ot Mr. .Norton as a man
ami pudlic servant spreads and
grows upon the sixth district.
With a knowledge of his abilities
and real character we commend him
to the confidence and support of the
voter8 of the seven counties of the
distnct as a faithful public servant
citizen worthy of all we have said
and moie.?Mullins Enterprise.
THE DEATH PENALTY.
A little thing sometimes results
