The jury in the case of the State
vs. Youmaus for the murder of Keels
was unable to reach a verdict and
the judge ordered a mistrial.
The Rev Mr Eason, who has been
pastor of the Baptist church here for
some months, has resigned and that
church is now without a pastor.

City. These gentlemen ask the patronage
of the tobacco growers of the
county.
Mr and Mrs Hugh McCufcchen

mountains. It is their purpose to
spend the remainder of the summer
in that state.
The annual examinations for
scholarships in the several colleges ^
of the State, were held at the court
house Friday last. Quite a company j
of ycung people stood the examinations.
Especially large was the^numbcr
of applicants for Winthrop
scholarships.
Prof P P Bethea, who has been
elected by the trustees of the Kingstiee
school to serve them for the
coming term, is iu Johnston with
his family at present. lie will fill
the place of instructor in the summer
school at Edgefield, and will
leave here about September 1st for
his new home. His many friends
here are glad to have him with them,
but regret that he leaves so soon.

The lecture of Dr C B Smith
which was delivered at the
Methodist church on the evening
of the 6th inst., drew a crowd
that filled the church comfortably.
The lecture was in Smith's
usual haoDV stvle and was
thoroughly* enjoyed.
Hail and wind storms did considerable
damage in the ProsSjct
neighborhood last week,

Brown's tobacco was practically
destroyed and the same storm
injured the crops on Mr J D Carter's
place to the extent of some
hundreds of dollars. And in
.Florence county in the Anderson's
and Bass's bridges sections
much havoc has been
wrought.
Mr W A Ward?'s new dwelling
house on Dansing street is being
completed and within a few days
the finishing touches will have
