TEACHERS AT HARTSVILLE.

ihstfittte Being Held at Hartsville.
The first sessiuu of the Pee Dee
Sumner School opened Wednesd ay
>morning Juo$ 29, with an enroll
ment of 120 student teachers who
who have gathered here from the
various cdunties embraced in this
district.
The hospitable people of Hartsvllle
had planned a reception for
Wednesday evening, but the heuvv
rainfall preventing, it was postponed
until Thursday evening. At the
appointed hour the school building
wss filled with earnest faces of young
men and women who have come
here for the purpose of better preparing
themselves for thegrent work
they have undertaken. Four speeches
of welcome delivered by Dr McCain,
Prof Dibble, two instructors, and
Rev Marion and Mayor Edwards of
Hartsville. Thus the evening was
very pleasantly spent.
On Friday an enormous crowd
gatheied at the old Law place and
enjoyed a delightful picnic given by
the military companies to the students
an faculty of the Pee Dee Summer
School. There were two lec
tnres in the morning bv Hon M L
Smith of Camden and Hon D B
Martin.
Classes have been organized. The
work is very interesting and all have
taken it tip with enthusiasm. Every
train brings in new teachers. vVe
were very fortunate in eecnring the
services of Dr G R Glenn of Georgia,
who delivered a series of lectures on
Teaching Power. Supt Martin was
with ns Friday and Saturday. His
lectures were enjoyed by all who
were so fortunate ?iS to be present.
Seven other noted lecturers are scheduled
to appear later.
The following teachers have enlolled
from Williamsburg county:
Misset: Annie Jones, Laura Whitlock,
Mellie Brockiuton, Ruth Coker, Es
telle Lee, May Van Keuren, Fannie
and Maggie Epps, Ida and Annie
Venters. We have a few rooms yet
vacant. The railroads have arranged
to give the teachers cheap rates to
the Summer School every Saturday,
so we hope that those'who have not
availed themselves of the opportunity
of attending this institution will do
so at once.

Morrisville Matters.
Morrisville, July 7:?The health
of our section is very good at present.
We are receiving refreshing showers
which are highly appreciated.
Crops are looking nicely considering
their being so late in getting up.
Mr C H Baker of Rome^ S. C.,
accompanied by his sister-in-law,
visited Morrisville recently.
Rev Mr Wilder of Sumter, S. C.,
preached for pastor Jones on last
Sunday night at the Baptist church.
His sermon was very much appreciated
by those present.
We hope the friends of Hon John
S Graham thronguout the county
will remember that his friends here
are anx ious that he may be elected.
Rev H B Jones is away this week
at Pinev Forest Baptist church conducting
a protracted meeting from
which we have already heard good

of Florence was with us a few
da,v s last week.
Mr J L Stuckey returned from
Charleston where he ha<l been undergoing
treatment at a hospital. He
is right sick.
Mrs I I Rollins was in Charleston
the early part of the week.
Mr N L Overstreet went off on his
annual vacation Wednesday. He
will spend a good portion of the
period in traveling and among the
places he will visit is St Louis where
he will "take in" the big fair.
Mr Tate of Summerville is night
operator here now. He succeeded
Miss Cecil Severance.
A call has been issued appointing.
Tuesday, the 12th, as the time for
the annual meetiug of the stock
holders of the Bank of Lake City.
Magistrate Baldwin and Constable
McCutchen went down to l^gstree
