The Republican convention has
named ("harles W. Fairbanks, United
States Senator from Indiana, as
Roosevelt's running mate.

In the Republican convention Senator
Fairbanks took occasion to refer
to Judge Parker as "a mystery". It
may b that he will prove too much
of a mystery for Roosevelt and Fairbanks
to solve at the polls.
The New and Courier is loud in

insisting that the county to county
State campaign be abolished. It is
the expense of sending a man arouud
to report these meetings that the
News and <)ourier objects to. There's
where the shoe pinches, 110 doubt.
Several towns in the State have
passet. ordinances against vagrants
and every habitual idler is arrested
and brought up before the town
council. Excelleut results are said
to foil aw the enforcing of this ordinance
wherever the experiment has
been made.

Talk about the expense to State
candidates under the present system
is absurd. Doesn't every body know
that a new candidate to stand any
show at all would have to visit every
county any way? TheD think of the
enormous expense of every aspirant
to office printing his speech in the
newspapers, which would become
necessary in the event the campaign
meeting1? were abolished.
An (irchitect of recoguized ability
should be careful in expressing an
opinion questioning the safety of a
public building. Some time ago
Mr C C Wilson of Columbia gave
out a statement that from mathematical
calculations based on measuiements
made by himself he suspected
that the dome of the much
abused State Capitol building was
unsafe and liable to topple over. On
the strength of this opinion Governor
Heyward employed an ex]>ert
architect to investigate the matter,
and now the expert reports that barring
oueor two minor defects the
dome is all right These expert opinions
coine high, to say Dothing of the
mental anguish suffered by the brave
State officials, who a la Casabianca,
held to their places when at any moment
a huge mass of steel and granite
might have come crashing down
. upon them.
Congressman Legare stands for re-election
in the First district without
. opposition, yet he is not without his
(i troubles. In the county of Churlesr
ton, where all the candidates are
i taxed beyond reason, his assessment
i has been fixed at $500 and now
? the other counties in the district are
r threatening to exact the same amount.

whereby candidates for Federal offices
and solicitor tan be assessed ex- j
cept by the State executive committee ;
but the county executive committees '
huve fallen into the custom of ask-1
ing these additional assessments and j
the candidates dare not ignore their j
polite requests. It is the iron hand
under the velvet glove. Such practices
are not in accord with the spirit
of democracy and the sooner they are
abolished the better it will be for
the party.

bride is a daughter of Mr Joseph
B Chandler of Benson, and the
gallant groom is a son of JIou Johu
S Graham of Morrisville, but'for
several years has been managing a
branch mercantile establishment at
Beuson for F lihem & Sons.

Obittiary.
Died?On Saturday, June 25,
1904, at her home at buttons, Mrs
W C Ogburn. The funeral took
place at Suttons church on Sunday
morning, the services being conducted
by Rev L L Inabinet. A
large crowd was assembled at the
church and took part in the last sad
rites. Besides her immediate fani ily
consisting of her husband, Postmaster
Ogburn, and two brothers
and one sister, her death is sincerely
mougned by a large number of
friends by whom she was held in
the highest esteem. SUED

vacaut scholarships in Winthrop
College and for the admission of new

scholarship in Clemson College will be
held at the courthouse on July 8th.
These scholarships were created by the
legislature at its last session and are
worth free tuition and $100 in money.
Any wh'te boy in the county who sat-'

that he or his parents are financially
unable to pay for his course in college
will be admitted to this examination.

the winners of scholarships to the
preparatory class. If successful applicants

the class they wish to enter at Clemson
College on Sept. 8th. Preference
