The presiding Judge and other officials arrived at the court house Monday morning at 10:45, and at 1:15 the court adjourned on recount of there being no cases to be tried. The only State official to have opr. * position is Mr J T Gautt, Secretary of State, who is opposed by M P Trib ble of Anderson connty. All told there are forty-three candidates who have filed their pledges, which number, of course, includes the candidates for congress and solicitor in the aeveral districts and circuits. Opportunity for a Young Man, The South Carolina College* offers scholarsjips in the Normal Department to two young men from each county. Each scholarship is worth $40 in money, besides remission of $40 tuition and $18 matriculation or "term" fee. The money is paid at the rate of $5 a month for eight months., to assist in meeting the necessary living expenses. Examination will be held Fridav, July 8th, before the County Board of Education. Applicants should be at leist 19 years of age, and preferably teachers. Write President Benjamin Sloan, South Carolina College-, Columbia, S. C.. for blank on which to apply before July 8. Smith's Mills, June 18:?One of the pleasauteat and most enjoyable occasions of the season was the picnic at Smith's Mills on June the 9th. Florence, MSrion, Georgetown and Williamsburg were well represented. Two very interesting and instruetixe addresses were made by the Hon J Norton of Marion and Senator J W Ragsdale of Florence. The attend- j ance numbered about three hundred,1 and dinner and refreshments were served in great abundance. Much credit is due to the efficient committee for having the ground so' conveniently arranged and the kind and thoughtful attention they gave to those present. About 6 p. m. the young people, after spending a long remembered day on the banks of the old romantic Pee Dee, assembled at the lovely residence of Mr and Mrs H Van Keuren, where the evening was pleasantly spent by the young people participating in games, and the hours passed quickly away listening to the beaatiful music rendered by MisSes,( Eva Venters Grace and May Van'* Keuren. The teachers attending the Pee Pee Summer School will come to a town that is verv desirous of having them, and will therefore do all it can for them. They will he well cared for on the same campus?will all eat in the same dining loom? a fid can have many discussions of the work in hand?of former experiences, etc., and therefore receive much greater benefit than can be had by atteuding a county summer school of two or three instructors, and twenty teacher-students. There is inspiration and eucouragement in numbers. The Pee Dee will have these. The expenses will he lower than the nsual expenses of a county summer school. Tue management is now making efforts to provide lectures, etc., sufficient to entertain and instruct those in attendance. The Pee Summer Summer School will be a success, aud will give added reputation to those why attend its sess'on. The names of the faculty is sufficient to guarantee this.
