News reached us here last i Thursday of a threatened race I riot at Rhems, in#the lower part of the county near the Georgej town line. It seems that on i Wednesday of last week, in an altercation between a white employee of the Messrs Rhem and a negro laborer, the latter was pretty roughly handled and at first was thought to be severely injured. Other negroes took it up and threatened vengeance, although the circumstances make it appear that the punishment inflicted was amply justifiable. On being notified of the trouble Sheriff Graham promptly went to the scene, but found that the excitement had subsided and things resumed their normal quiet. The negro, whose head was i reported broken, had only a! scalp -wound or two, which are now not considered serious. As a rule the negro race is excitable and emotional, beingquick to take the part of one of his color without waiting to investigate the merits of the case, when ofttimes, after the excite ment passes and his calmer judgment resumes sway, he finds that fiis threats of vengeance were not based on sufficient grounds. When he keeps his place and conducts himself properly, the negro has no better friend than the Southern white man. GOURDINS DEPOT BURNED. The Building Struck by Lightning and Totally Destroyed. Station Agent Graham was in the telegraph office when the lightning struck, but fortunately he escaped unhurt. Benson Briefs. [Written for last week).
