Mr Bass' article lecently printed in The Record, presenting facts and ligures showing the profit fc ^ 5 derived from strawberries iu the kr. : vicinicyof Lake City, has attracted I s wide attention, and certainly there could be no more convincing argumerit as to the superior advantages, of our fertile soil and geuial climate, i ? ^ This article ha?, moreover, been re- ; produced in no less than six news- j * paper* throughout the State (and possib y others that escaped our notice), and in several instances it was j made the subject of editorial cornf, ment. What has been done in the way of i successful truck-farming around Lake City and Cades can be equaled e* in many parts of the county?in fact, v.ith the light kind of cultivaW: tion V> illiamsburg could be made a J veritable '"garden-spot." J Certainly when Nature was distribu- j ^ ting her gifts she shut her eyes and j ^ strewed them "broad cast" upon this j favored land. Talk about an El g. Dorado! There is no country be-1 tween the Atlantic and the Pacific where the soil responds more generously to honest labor intelligently; m directed thau may be'found in this' & section of South Carolina. Our county is undeveloped and ! ? even now is.in a transition state. Up; to a few years ago the methods of farming were crude, but the people' have awakened and now are advanc* ' ing with vigorous strides along every avenue of productive industry. In- j tensive farming, thq proper use of fertilizers and diversified crops? , these are the keys to unlock the vast treasure house of agricultural wealth about us. ***** No. that the wheels of progress are turning we hope to see more attention given to manufacturing by our people. Already there nave! been experimental ventures in this i direction and in no case have the re- | suits proved discouraging. But the : time is ripe for larger enterprise. , Not necessarily to invest too much | capital in a single venture, but rather to establish a uumber of small i I" enterprises. It- has Uvu demonstrated that there are business men in Kingstree with ability to promote such enterprises and succesfully manage them when they are established. "With brain and capital they have it in their power to accomplish much in the ?p-buildiug of our tow n and county. We hope they will utilize the oppoituuitics before them and not be like the man with the one talent. Who will take the lead as a eaptaih of industry and organize the forces at command into an army of victory? The State Press Association will hold its thirtieth annual meejiug at White Stone Springs, July 12-14. The editor of The Record is on the programme to read a paper. Mr Scarborough has served two terms in the National Legislature and his retirement at this time comes as a surprise to his friends throughout the district. A reader asks if there is an ordinance against fast driving within the town limits. We are of the opinion that there is such an ordinance, but it seems to be a dead letter. Just why it is not enforced we are unable to say. On behalf of the people of the town, and especially the little children playing in the streets, we appeal to the town council to put a stop to this reckless drivinor A a an instrument of extennin ation, u horse ami buggy driveu at furious speed is as effective as a red devil automobile. When it becomes a case for the coroner it will be too late to demand that the ordinance be observed. OPENING OF THE CAMPAIGN. Candidate Mobley Assaults His Opponent, Mr W Boyd Evans with a Whip. Last Friday in Columbia, Mi John G Mobley, a candidate for rail fond commissioner, attacked Mr W Boyd Evans, a candidate for the same position, with a cowhide whip. Mr Evans closed in on his assailant and put up the stiffest tight he could in I the circumstances, as he was taken entirely by surprise and Mr Mobley is a big, burly man physically. According to the newspaper reports of the affair Mr Moblev approached Mr Evars on the street and asked him several questions. Mr Evans' replies not being satisfactory, Mobley assaulted him with his rawhide, which he had kept concealed behiud li s back. By-stauders separated the two men and then turned them loose and they went at it again until the sheriff appeared and took them in charge. Both men were put uuder peace bonds and summoned to appear before the recorder on the following day, when the case was heard and dismissed as to Evans while Mobley was fined $20.
