Two years f. ago Mr Evans led in the first primary for this office over about ten candidates, but was defeated by Mr B L ? Caughman in the second race. Mr j Bvans was Governor Ellerbe's private iecretary and is now a prominent member of the Columbia bar. By t- -reason of native ability and experience in administrative affairs he is admirably fitted for the office of railroad commissioner. . June 6:?The long drouth was broken last week by grateful and refreshing showers, but we are getting pretty dry again. Crops thar are up look well. Farmers are busy gathering their oats, of which a fair crop hue been made. Owing to the contractor's illness work on the Baptist chnreh building was suspended last Tuesday and was not resumed until today. If there be no further delays our Baptist frieude will very soon have a house of worship of which any town might justly be proud. There will be a festival at the town hall next Friday night, June 10, given for the benefit of the Baptist church. The public is cordially inTited and we should be glad to have Kingstree represented. Mr Joe Lewis aud Miss Mattre Holliday, one of Clarendon's fair daughters, were married last Thursday night at the home of the bride's parents near Foreston. The ceremony was performed by Rev Mr Inabinet. Mr Lewis is farming near. town. We wish fur the happy pair a long and prosperous life. ? Miss Irene Gordon of Lenud visited friends near Greelyville last week. Miss Nettie Williams, w ho has beeu spending a week with her sis-j ter, Mrs C Q Joyner, returned this moruing to her home iu Sumter. ^ Miss Ejqla Keels has been sick for the past few days, but I Am glad to leport thatshe is much batter now. Miss Jessie, daughter jf Mr R C Brown, was married today to Mr Pettiboue, the ceremony beifl? performed by Rev Mr Inabinet at the Methodist parsonage. Mr R S Bruusou has moved into his new cottage on Mill street. We are glad to have "Bob" in town. The material for bnilding Mr R H Johnson's resideuce is on the ground and work will begin within the next - -? e few days. Several of our boys visited Foreston yesterday. The play, "Ten Nights in a Barroom," will be given by local talent here in the town hall in the near future. "The Greelyville Theatrical Troupe" is now rehearsing under the skillful management of Mr C N Alluon, who helped with this play at Home recently. The proceeds of the entertainment will be divided between the two churches here. VlDI. Miss Gertrude Rodenkerchen of Florence spent Saturday and Sunday with Mrs vVmslow \Vlight. Miss Estelle Cowaid of Effingham is attending to the dry goods counter and' millinery department of Mr Window Wright's big store. The Pythian excursion brought back a bn'de to Scranton. The local talent was quick to receive so fair a one to their town and ga\e expression of welcome by a serenade that filled the air with vibrations. A few more marriages would surely result in the organization of a band. The bride was the eldest daughter of Mr G Henry Barnwell of Adam's Run near Charleston* whose family were prominent secessionists and wholesouled South Carolinians. The happy witiner of the fair one was D Lamar Lee, a young merchant and a grand son of W Lewis Lee, first merchant dnd founder of Scranton.
