Items of Interest Picked up *Twixt
Scranton and Johnsonvilie.
Scraxtok, May 10:?Owing to
^ the dry, windy, cool weather a large
^ portion of the crops along the route
are small, and in many places a very
poor stand. Some have plowed up
their cottcn and planted over again.
Early planted corn looks very well,
but corn planted late is "sorry".

tobacco have been unable to get a

crop of tobacco I have seen.
Died, May 12, uear Vox, youngest
child of Mr and Mrs J B Altman,
aged about 11 months.
Mrs S Snow Cox of Johnsonville
has beeu quite sick for the past week.
She was the least bit better Saturday.
I hope Mrs Cox will soon be
up and out again.
Mr John T Eaddy of Johnsonville
came up to Scranton Friday,
the 13lb, to attend the K of P
meeting.
.Mr Osgood Haselden came over
Thursday night from Horry county
to visit his father, Mr S B Haselden
of Johnsonville. It is a pleas^
ure to grasp the hand of Mr Osgood '
as he is always so genial and affable, i
One night last week a difficulty
arose between Dave Stephenson and <
Eli Brown, colored, near Siugle. It
seems that Eli Brown undertook to
6have Dave, but his services did not
prove satisfactory, as the shaving
was done on the left arm instead of 1
the face. As compensation for the ?
use of the razor 011 Dave's arm he ;
gave Ely a load of No 6 shot, which
took effect from Ely's neck to his
feet, h;8 stomach being the center of <
interest. They are each doing fairly
well nursing their wounds.

AN OPEN LETTER.
From theChapin, S. C., News: .
Early in the spring my wife and I
were taken sick with diarrhoea I
and so severe were the pains that
we called a physician who prescribeu
for us, but his medicines t
failed to give any rebef. A friend (
who had a bottle of t hamberlain's
f'nlie. Cholera and Diarrhoea Rem
edy on hand gave each of us a dose y
and we at once ielt the effects. I
procured a bottle and before using
the entire contents we were entire- i
ly cured. It is a wonderful remedy
and should be found in every
household. H C Bailey, Editor, i

CURED HIS MOTHER OF
RHEUMATISM.
"My mother has been a sufferer
for many years with rheumatism,"
says YV H Howard, of Husband Pa.
"At times she was unable to move
at all, while at all times walking
was painful. I presented her with
. 3. bottle of Chamberlain's Pain
Balm and after a few applications
she decided It was the most wonderful
pain reliever she had ever tried.
In fact, she is never without it now
and is at all times able to walk. An
occasional application of Pain
Balm keeps away the pain that she
was formerly troubled with." For
sale by Dr l) C Scott, Kingstree;

A Pleasant Occasion.
On last Saturday, May 7, the good
people of this community had
planned a picnic at the "cut down
ground", on the " dawks of Black
river. A n umiak had\ gathered
when there came a ftice.f xefroshiug
shower, to the delight of alt vpre&nt,
as the rain was greatly needed to
biing up the cotton and other crops.
Many on the way to the picnic

way. After the shower, the place being
very damp and the clouds very
threatening, we repaired to the hospitable
home of that estimable old
genteman, Mr Ilex Scott, near by,
who placed parlor aud porch at the
disposal of the crowd, all of whom
appreciated and enjoyed the various
diversions until dinner was an- '
nounced. There was spread the
most delicious edibles that could
have been prepared by the fair ladies
of this or any other community and
every one enjoyed the same to the
superlative degiee, and left with new
vigor aud courage to take hold and
proceed with their efforts in their
avocations of life with the hope of
meeting ere long on auother Buch
occasiou. "Uncle F."

The drought is still on. There
ias been very little rain since the 11
ast of March. Early planted corn o
s looking fairly well and in fine
ihape with good stands; later planing
not doing so well, with irreguar
stands.
Cotton is not up yet. Some of I
he planters have been over their a
:rops with 6weeps in hopes that ?
;his will cause the seed to come up,
vh;le others ara speakiug of plant- ll
ng jver. This section is seriously
u need of rain.
The oat crop is .'.hort and looks as
f the yield will not be sufficient to
sarrant the expense of harvesting. Gardens
are poor. The outlook .
