'.. ,0 t The School Book Question.
i- Editor Conuty Record:?
K Please allow rac 8p:ue to ask a few
ITi1 qaeetions with regard to the furnishing
of teit books for the free
? schools. I noticed that the law (as
published in The Record) provides
that the couuty superintendent of
education should have been fur*
nished with $500 to purchase th-se
textbooks. Why is it then that
our school children are deprived of
* these books? I know of several chil*'?
<tr?n wVid Viati. totalis rtanrivpd
t* of ichool privileges because the
proper books could not be procured.
f. One of niyowu children is short sev'
?ral of these books and I have applied
three different time9 to the j
I Superintendent of education for
them without being abls to get
I consider this no small matter for
m *** voters of our county to consider i
when casting their ballots. It is a
^ierioue matter indeed to deprive
gftp^poor children of free school advani
tages, their only chimce for any sort
e:^.of educatioi^ merely because they
Kb can't get the kind of books required,
I auujuiai; ,ivu. n uvu tae inw uisuu
r;ly says that the superintendent of!
education shall keep them on sale at j
cost.
The teachers are willing to in?trnctv
these children without the
Jgjpks, but to do so would be to risk ;
"""^Ioeing their salaries. Thus we have ;
it that by the negligence of soute of i
oar officials hundreds of childreu
are barred from the public schools, i
H ^ ' I hope this protest will tend to I
\ V awaken our officials to a sense of
; i their doty. These men are paid by
^ the county and furnished with the
! money by the tax-payers to buy and
[ ' keep these books on hand. Thev
' will perhaps say that the amount is
k *. not sufficient; but at anv rate it might
tHT'Oeexpenuea oeuer man it is at prescat.
I can see no excuse for the con ! ir;.
tion that our children aie placed in.
IS I wish to ask the voters of the
tL county if the same conditions preW
Tail with them as with us in this
P matter. If so, I think we had betjr
ter as'* candidates for this office in
1' the next campaign how they stand
K along this line.
? ; I do n<>t mean to be personal io
this article, as I do uot believe onr
/present officials are aware of the
I ' great harm that is being done in deW
priving the children of their school
j . advantages for the reason above staL
ted. I hope this will be read in the
? spirit in which it is intended.

B A GREAT SENSATION.
I There was a big sensation in
Leesvitle, Ind. when W. H. Brown
I of that place, who was expected to
die, had his lite sav^d by Dr King's
; ?few Discovery for Consumption.
j^He writes: MI endured insufferable
agonies from Asthma but your New
Discovery gave m*? immediate relief
and soon thereafter effected a
complete cure." Similar cures of
Consumption, Pneumonia, Bronehltis
and Grip are numerous. It's
the peerless remedy for all throat
and lung troubles. Price 50c, and

The cold spring is very damaging
to vegetables of all kinds and truck

A good deal more cotton will be

Mr H M Godwin and Mi-s *elina

Miss Lillian Pardons of Darlington,

regret her departure.
Miss [.aura Moore, who has beeu

Miss Amanda Cook has returned

has been teaching.
Dr J C .Moore, who has been attending

THE FIRST SHIPMENT OE STRAW-1
BERRIES BRINGS A FANCY PRICE
Mercantile Business Changes Hands?
A New Hotel?Theory as to Artesian
Wells.
Lake City, April IS:?Tin*strawberry
season h<is opened. The first
shipments were made on the 12th.
They were made by Messrs T P Graham.
and W T Asking. Dr Hinnant
and MPs Sarah Godwin. Of course
there were only a few quarts,
but on the next day twenty-four
crates went forth and since then the
number has mounted rapidly every
day. It is probable that before the
close of this week the berries will begin
going away by the car load. The
first sale reported was of a crate for
-Mr T P Graham, which was sold by
Smith & Holden, New York. The
price was 40cts per quart?$12.80
per crate. Not so bad, eh? From
now uutil the season closes the berry
growers, drummers and agents will
keep things lively. The rivalry
among the drummers and agents is
keen and exciting. The scenes that
transpire around ihe depot twice a
day?morning and evening?are
worth witnessing. The I^uke City
berry is a favorite in New York
where it is specially and distinctively
quoted. That city gets the bulk of
our crop, while Philadelphia, Baltimore,
and Richmond get about all
the remainder.
Miss Nellie Forest is home from
school.
Mr L A Winston has leased from
MisF C Rodders her dwelling and
the new residence next door In
these build in us Mr Winston will run
a hotel.
The Lake City Drug Co. has
moved its entire stock into the store
lately occupied by 1 r Johnson.
Mr J B Husbands of Friendfield,
Floreuce county, and his little tirl,
accompanied by a friend, spent Saturday
in town.
Mr J P Phillips has sold out his
mercantile business to Mr J II V
(Jaskins. Mr Phillips says that he
may re-enter the world of tra e next
fall, but will t.ike a go.'d rest in the
meantime.

Are artesian wells unmixed blessings?
Some right wise 'leads are beginning
to th'uk they are not. The
opinion is steadih growing tnat the
alarming increase of fevers in this
country may be due to the vast
amount of water that these wells are
continually pouring over the earth
to soak and seep into soil. Would it
not be prudent to look into this?
Health is to be pieferred even to
cool, sparkling water.
