A Little Peculiar.
A correspondent at Scranton writ- j
ing to the Kingstree Countv Record 1
says that "Hell has broken loose" in !
that bnrg since the dispensary opened :
its doors. He then proceeds to knock
the institution for all he is worth.
All of this is very commonplace but
the peculiar feature of the letter is
that the correspondent signs himself
XXX. That a man should choose ,
for his signature the title of the dis- J;

article abusing this same brand is a ;

Lake City's Enterprise.
W L Bass in his Lake City corres- j,
pondenceof the County Record says ;
that a canning factory is being
worked up iu that town. This is ;
good news. Lake City is a lire town
and one of the finest truck s*>ctions
v- !
in the country surrounds it, thousands
of dollars worth of good material
for canning goes for a song there ,
every year and this enterprise, if
properly couducted, as we doubt not

tt will be, will prove a great money I
saver for the community. The-South j
1 . ; i
has passed the experimental stage in j
the canning business, goods manu- j
factured in this section are in demand
now, whereas a few years ago |
it was hard to find a market for j
them. During these years of ex-!<
perimental work and preparing the j
markets "of the world for southern . t
canned stuff, a number of our local J
enterprises went by the board. There j
is not much danger of further fail-;
ures along this line and our friends
in Lake City will set an example for;,
the rest of the truck raising country i '
to follow. It is 110 use to say we;,

A Slander Nailed.
Seme time ago Congressman Scott
)f Kansas asserted on the floor of
L'nited Slates Hon?e of Keprcsentatives
that vriiile Grover Cleveland
ttus Pu-sident a negro named C II J
Taylor had di-.rd with him at the
White Huntf. The purpose* of this
statement was to olt-sK the r.oror.ous
fact tiiat looker Washington
was entertained by Roosevelt. A few
drys after Scott's charge a letter was
read in the House by a member who
had written to Cleveland asking him
about the matter. In his reply Mr
Cleveland averred that '*the statement
that the colored man, C II J
%
Taylor, took lunch with him at the
White House was a deliberate fabrication,
out of the- whole cloth,''
which is a parliamentary way of
characterizing it as ir-malieions iie.
There are a great, many things
about Mr Cleveland that we do not
admire, but for the sake of the Deni*
nenitSe narfv. bv which he was
elected chief executive, we are truly
glad that he was in a j?osition to
deny in no-qjhbiguous way this slanderous
charge.
When th?' Ex-President's letter
was read Mr Scott s.iid that lie had
read the statement in the newspapers
and had never seen it denied. When
pressed for the name of the paper <>r
papers Mr Scott said that "he had
forgotten".
The Hampton Monument,
Nearly $7,000 of the $10,000 to
be raised by the people of South Car)lina
for the Hampton monument
has been subscribed, leaving about
>3,000 yet required t<- be raised.
A fesv days ago a statement was
printed in the daily papers showing
how much had been subscribed by
the various counties. This" state
inent shows that the whole amount
that has been raised has been subscribed
by twenty-eight counties, the

from $2 from Jldgefield to $1356
from Richland. But the thing that
most concerns us is that Williamsburg
docs not appear in the list of
counties that have paid anything all.
This is a most mortifying and
humiliating state of things and it
should be remedied as soon as possible.
Iu the dark and stormy days
[)f Reconstruction Wade Hamp on
<va6 the Moses who led us out of the
wilderness of "carpet-b.ig" rule, and
Williamsburg has much to be grateful
for to his memory for his influence
and guidance during that unspeakably
gloomy period. And yet
according to the showing made not
one man, woman or child has contributed
one cent to give visible rccog
nition to the love and honor that,
we feel sure, is felt for him in every
heart.
Very little good it will do him, it
is true, this tardy tribute to his
greatness; but it will at least show
the world that we do not allow our
departed heroes to rest in oblivion,
their memory effaced in the dull
dead dust of forgetfulness. Friends,
let us do something to put our county
in a better light. Auv contribution,
however small, will be acceptable.
We will take it upon ourself to furward
any subscriptions left at this
office to the monument committee,
tlong with the name of the donor.
We hope that this appeal will not
jo entirely unheeded.
