EMIGRANT AGENT PULLED.
j
'relimirary Hciring Held Yesterday? j
Case Sent to Upper Court.
There was something doing in j
dacintntte Grayson's court Tuesda\ ,
l11<I Wednesday. On Tuesday h pro-'
jminaiy hearing was bold in the,
ruse ot tin? State against Xoab Siu-i
jletary, charged with murder. On I
iccount of injufticiencv of evidence, j
lie case was dismissed and the do
endant released. The crime al-j

ime ago. 'J'lie evidence against the
h fendant was purely circumstantial
nd in the opinion of the court it,
ras not sufficiently strong to war-'
ant him in sending the case to# the
cssious court.
An interesting case yesterday was
lie preliminary hearing in the mater
of the State ts Alva Smith,
harged with carrying on the busiless
of an emigrant agunt without a :
icense. Smitli hails from Shirk",1
' la, and represents himself as being ;
-onuecied with the lirni of Smith, i
Lowell & Co., natal stores manu-1
acturers. He was represented by!
dessrs Lee and Kelley, while Messrs'
rillaud and Gilland were council for!
he prosecution. The warrant was!
worn out hv Col VF B Wilson of!
ialem. After hearing the testimony i
iffered l?v the State and the argu- j
neiits'of council, the court rul?d!
hat the State had made out its case
.ml ordered it sent up to the upper
ourt. Bail for the defeudant was
ixed in the sura of $500.
It seems that some days ago Smith
out a negro, one S J McCutcheu to
his county to get up hands to take;
o Florida. The negro was arrested
iud is now in jail. Smith came to
he rescue of his emissary and it is
illegvd that he took occasion to do
oino soliciting on his own account.
ni __.i . t 11 !
L lie outcome or mesc cuee& is
waited with much concern, as it is
i matter of vital interest to the
aimers whether or not the law
igainst emigrant accnts can be en'orceil.

REVIEW OF THE WEEK S LEGISL ATIVE
WORK.
Very Little Real Work Done?Lien Law
May be Repealed?Prospect of
New Jail for Williamsburg.
The Capital,Columbia, January
18:?The General Assembly corm-Ded
on Tuw-uav,January 12th, with uearly
all the members preset)I. Very
little time was spent in ojxmin;; formalities
and the hodv settled down.
Several bills huve been introduced,
but very little real work has been
done. Electioneering for the different
candidates is the principal occupation
of the members and then
friends. Little is heard except the j
merits aud demerits of the different
aspirants. The elections will be held j
nest Thursday and until they arc
over the regular business will receive J
but a small share of attention. Justice
Woods will be re-elected withouti
oppoS'tion. Mr W 0 Tatuin will be
the next liquor commissioner, the
other candidate, C'apt Black, having
withdrawn from the race. Mr Tatniu
is a brother-in-law of our Mr T E
Salters of Sal*era. "Hub" Evans'
and McDermott want to he chairman
of the Board of Control. Evans'j
election seems to bo pretty well cooceded.
For the other places ou the
Board, Walker and Boy kin are leading
with Towill and Wylic* making
ilie race interesting. It is safe to say
that Miss LaBorde will be reelected
State Librarian, though Misses Blacky
I)acti9 and Tompkins are seeking the
position.

the House Friday which provides
that anyone treating on election day
within three niilesof the polls shall
he guilty of u misdemeanor.
The lien law is already receiving
attention. I& repeal is called for by
a bill introduced Wednesday. The
House seems willing to vote for the
measure if the people want it repealed,
but they desire to know the
will of the majority before taking
such a radical step as the killing of
this law. Some of our clearest
headed legislators seem to think that
wisest thing to do would be to refer
the matter back to the people for
settlement.
Playing with road law goes merri
lv on. Another attempt at making
a flexible law is being made. A bill
has been presented which provides
that the county commissioners shall
fix the number of days during
which labor shall be performed
on the roads, and that the commutation
tax shall be at the rate of
twenty five cents per day. A reso-1
Intion has passed the Hoin?e provid- J
ding for an amendment to the Constitution
permitting special legislation
on the working, opening and j
maintaining of highways. This I
seems to be the mo3t favored solution
of the much vexed load question, j
The resolution passed the House by j
a tremendous majority, there being !
only two nays.
The Senate by a vote of 15 to 14
sent the Shad bill back to the com- j
mittee on Thursday. Those opposed I
to the measures'are making desperate
efforts to kill or side track it, but it
is believed that there are enough
Senators who are unwilling for a few
people of Georgetown to monopolize
the entire industry and finally destroy
this best of all fish, to pass the

The Lanham baggage bill was
first voted down in the Senate, then
reconsidered and finally passed with
amendment fixing the anionut. of
baggage at 200 pounds. .This must
be concurred in by the House before
becoming law.
Mr Bass by request, is now having
engrossed a bill empowering the
county commissioners to build a new
jail at Kingstree. The' full text of
! this bill will l>o given at an earl5 j
I day.
