THURSDAY, JANUARY 7, 1003
The street fakers have folded their
teuta and Wed tbem away to a more
congenial fcTiine.
The Legislature meets-next Tuesday.
While there seems- tj be no
measures of vital importance before
them, yet we daresay the "Solons"
will find enough to engage their attention
until the constitutional forty
? days' limit is reached.
t
Tbv R?rrtun to its friends.
including subscribers and advertisers,
its sincere heartfelt appreciation
for the liberal patronage given
it dnring tta past year. Now, as it
a
enters upon the uew year?the twentieth
year of its existence?it is with
determination to bend every
energy to make it better than it has
ever beeu under tho present management.
We contemplate making several
necessary improvements in the
near fature, which wo hope will im
/ prove the appearance of the paper
\ from a mechanical standpoint
Hoping to deserve the continued
confidence and support of the public
we wish our readers, one and all, a
. .. happy and prosperous new year.
A Just Grievance.
Complaint among fanners is load
and general on account of emigra.
tion agonts enticing laborers away
\ from the farms. In flagrant viola.
\tion of the law these emissaries from
- the turpentine farms of Georgia and
Florida slip in and carry off crowds
of able-bodied negroes, leaving many
farms entirely without the labor '
necessary to till them. Last year
farm laborers Were extremely scarce, i
and this year, owing to the blandish- '
meats of the emigration agent, indications
are that they wftl be scarcer ,
Still. JLt is simply outrageous that
this thing shonld go on, and-yet the !
.^~\Jand-<rwner* teem to be powerless to
protect themselves, so adroit are the
operations of the wily "agents". A
farmer, who has built a number of
houses on his place for his negro
tenants, told us a f ew days ago that
every one had been enticed away,
leaving him at the beginning of the
year without a 6iaglc plow or hoe
band.
There is already a prohibitory
license applying to this county to
protect onr people against this sort
of thing, but it seems to be of but
little avail. Occasionally an emigration
agent i6 caught "red-banded"
and hauled up before a magistrate,
but he seoms to shuffle out of it by
, ( gome means. As a rule they are
too wary to be caught and they actually
seem to have a contempt for
, the law.
As it now stands the condition
Confronting our farmers is "a serious
one. Sorely something can be done
to rrotwr them from those labor ^

xee-booters. More stringent lave,
naking it a penitentia:y offense,
without the alternative of a fine to
mtiee laborers away, might be a
aieans of relief. If a few of theae
bold law-breakere were made to wear
jtripee il. would undoubtedly have a

aeverreni influence upon merest am:
they would seek their laborers in
other States more lenient in their
laws as to emigration agents.
General James Longstreet.
General James Longstreet, the
last Confederate lieutenant. general,
with the exception of Gen J B Gordon,
diod at his home in Gaineeville,
Ga., on the 2nd inst, at the extreme
old age of eighty-four years. It is a
fact npt generally known that Gen
Longstreet was born in Edgefield
county, S. (\, where he lived until
It* was fan yahtr nlH
His command during the Confederate
war, consisting of the flower
of the army, boie the brant of many
a hard-fought conflict and he ranked
as one of the ablest of Southern generals.
The lustre of his military
reputation was muoh bedimmed, h ow
ever, by his career after the war. As
commander of the "carpet-bag"
metropolitan police in New Orleans
in 1874 he ordered them to fire upon
the young patriots of the city, who
were banded together to protect their
homes and families. His slaoderoas
criticism of Gen Leo also aroused
great indignation m the Sonth.
He held office under the Republican
admin: strut ion np to his death
and oulj a few years ago supplanted
Wade Hampton as United States
railroad commissioner.
