Mr J C Epps is home from Atlanta,
Ga, bei'-g called to the bedside
of his wck mother. His many
friends are gratiGed to know that he
is doing well.
Capt T B Reddick, who has been
section master at this place for the
A C L for the past three years, has
received a promotion, having been
placed in charge of the yard at
Charleston. Capt Reddick was a
general favorite in town and his
friends sincerely regret hie departure.

| A Christmas Dining.
I One of the pleasantest social
events of the holiday season
was a dining given on Christinas
day by Miss Lula Strong
complimentary to Misses Bessie and
Janie Johnson of Pensacola, Fia.
The dinner houi was seven o'clock
and by that time quite a number
of guests had assembled at the hospitable
home of the hostess.
After dinner, the menu of which
was rich and varied, the evening was

parlor, which whs tastefully decorated
with holly and mistletoe
, tnd other beautiful evergreens. The
pleasure of the occasion was much
enhanced by the beautiful music
rendered by Misses Mabel aud Belle
Harper, both ot whom are skilful
and brilliant pianists.
Much amusement was dtlived
fiom the "drawing contest'', in
which the first prize was awarded to
Mr C W Wolfe und the booby prize
to Mr Wilmot Gilland. Some of
the sketches were great. Miss Strang,
the charming aDd accomplished hostess,
was assiduous in her attention
to her guests, all of whom enjoyed
a most delightful evening, Those

The election Monday resulted in
the selection of the following municipal
officers for the ensuing \ear:

and D M Epps.
It is said that arrangements are
being made by the board of control
for opening a dispensary at Scrantou
early in January. Ic is also rumored
that oue will be established
here a little later Some seem to
think that we shall surely have the
rum shop this time. Well, may be

Proceedings Stayed by Temporary
Injunction?Christmas Tragedy
at Lake City.
Laxk City, December 30: Chrisi-i
here was one of the dullest in many1
a year. The rain began Thursday
n gbt and continue a steady down*
pour Friday until sun-down.
The fight over the Lake City and
Scianton dispensaries goes merrily
on. For two and a half years the
war has been waged and those opposed
to whiskey shops at thas place
hare not yat surrendered, though *
they have fought agaiDStJtremend
ous odds, and at times the liquor was
so near that its odor seemed to .permeate
the atmosphere; bat it was
sent awsy.
Once dating this "war" acar-loadi
was actual)? put into the dispen*
sarv" at Scranton, and another on
the side track at Lake City; bnt a
baud went ont and moved it away.
But it seemed to be the impression
that at last the opponents of the ^
dispensary hud about given up and
that the new year would see the
rum 9hope in fall blast. The opponents
however,were not dead yet and
last Monday night their attorneys, S
W G Shipp and W L Bass, went

a pelinnnary injunction aaainst tha
board of control and an order to
show cans* on the 6th of January
why the .injunction should not bo
continued. Therefore we may say
positively that the dispensariei will
not be opened before the 5th.
Monday afternoon, "Monkey"
Dick, a turbulent character of sable
hue about town, was fatally shot
by an officer while resisting arrest.
Monkey was diunk and disorderly
and Policeman Gaston Ward ar
rested him and locked him tip in the
guard house. At the time of his arrest
he resisted aDd shewed fight,
attempting to draw a pistol. He
was prevented from doing so by Mr \
Janus Sturgeon, a by-stacder, and ?
the weapon secured. While being
taken to the guard hov.ee he gave
so much trouble that Officer Ward
was forced to use his clnb.
Some time after being locked np
Monkey broke prison and it was ^
daik when bis escape was discovered.
Ward went to hunt his prisoner and
found him on Thomas street near
Mr G T Hollins'. Nobody but Ward
knows just what happened, for it
was dark and there were no lights I
near. Monkey had declared that ha I
would not he put back in prison and
had l is knife out, open and ready.
When Ward attempted to take hold
of him heetrnck at W ard with the
knife, cutting a long gash in bis
ccat just over the heart and arother
in the right hand lower ooruer.
Ward was heard to say: ''If you cut
me I will shoot you!" Monkey cnt ^
and Ward shot. The pistil was so
close that Monkey's clothes caught
nn fira Th? hnllt-t err'ered the left i
side at the back and penetrated the
abdominal visc^tae. He died about ,
24 hours thereafter. The inquest
was held by Magistrate Baldwin and
the veidict completely exonerated
Ward from all blame.
