Henry Patrick* a white man living at Bennettsville, who in the latter part of last October killed his wife in a peculiarly horrible and revolting manner, was tried one month later and found guilty with a recommendation to mercy. The plea set np by the prisoner was that the killing was accidental. And yet, besides the fatal gun-shot wound the woman's body was disfigured by several gashes from a knife or a rater, which the counsel for the de fenec did not attempt to explain. The testimony at the trial seemed to prove that Patrick was loaded up with liquor and deliberately shot his wife to death. In these circa instances it is difficult to determine the basis for the jnry's recommendation to mercy, unless it was simply to emphasize the fact that there is no suoh thing as capital pnnishment for a white man in South Carolina. Ou account of its novelty the esse attracted wide-spread attention and the whole affair seemed to be regarded as a huge joke. The Grand Jury Submit Their Final Presentment. To Hi* Honor, R C Watts, Presiding Judge, November term, 11903. The Grand Jury -beg leave to submit their final presentment, as follows: 1 First, That they hare acted ufon all o! the bills handed them by the Solicitor?ten in number? having found nine "true bills" ar.d one "no bill," and congratulate the county upon the iacl that there are no grave offences among these bills, and upon the further fact that crime seems to be upon the decrease in this county. Second, That the special committee appointed at the spring term of court, consisting ot the foreman, S M Askins, VV T Wilkins and T O Epps, assisted by their expert, Hoxie G Askins, Esq, made the examination during the summer of the various offices and are pleased to say thai they lound the elerk's office, the probate judge's office, the supervisor's office, the auditor's office, the sheriff's office and the superintendent of education's office, and everything in perfect order as required by law. The treasurer's office we would have examined and checked up, but owing to the death ot our lamented treasurer, Mr K 0 Rollins, who died on the 12ih day ol September, 1903, we were not able to do so; but we have no doubt that on a subsequent examination everything will De found correct, as he was a most efficient officer and we deeply deplore his death. The final settlement withfthe treasurer has not yet been made, as the comptroller general has not yet been down to make such settlement. Eighth, Being informed that the officials are taking steps to build a new jail, we do not deem it necessary lo make any further report on this matter, as it is n well knouru fact that this building has been in need of repair for some time. Ninth, We also call attention to the fact that there are a number ot broken glasses in the court house and we recommend that the proper officials have the same replaced at once, in order to protect the court hcuse in case of a driving rain or storm.
