k JProspect of a Fine School?Personal
jr and Social Notes.
i Well, Mr Editor, I am glad to
J tell you there is some goo I news.
f Never is it all bad. Tobacco lias
reached the very loot o.'-the hill,
cotton is on a descent and the
corners of the farmers' mouths are
following the same direction.
But let me tell you, our ^District
School" at Venters has actually
dated a beginning! Ii opened up
auspiciously last Monday with
Prof Brown ol Conway and Miss
Cora Hungins of Venters as organ
izers, instructors, anil disciplinarians
all summed up in the one
ordinary word, teachers. We
have great confidence in iheir
ability and expectancy foritnpro'uient
of our children runs high.
For at least ten years our community
has been agitated over
this Graded School subject, but lor
one cause or anoiher it never took
shape and became a reality until
onr h.ghly esteemed and thoroughmoving
Dr H. was enlisted in its
behalf. There is hardly any such
word as fail in his vocabulary.
Think ihere were only a few less
than a hundred pupils to begin
with, and likely there will be a
hundred and fifty before Ohrist
mas. A good many children are
-*>; helping to harvest the crops.
Mi >ses Minnie Belle Siin nons
and Eulalia Oox left us a few
weeks ago to attend Littleton Female
Co'lege. The tormer was
there last year. They are well
pleased and wide beautiful letters
home in commendaii >n of this
school. Quite a number o! boys
and giris in our section are arousing
to their educational interests.
Only ten years ago very lew attended
any college.

(Written for last week.)
Mr .1 I Morris is building himself
a new dwelling at Cams,
Mr J It Cox of Sumter has been
visiting the family of his brother
in-law, Mr J Frierson Iluggins.
MrP R Donnelly came up from
Charleston recently and spent

I community
The school at this place will com

that Miss Lila Epps of king>tree
has been employed as teacher
lot the ensuing term.
A. good deal of cotton is planted
in this section and the yield s
lairlv good this season. Labor is
plentiful and the crop is being
rapidly harvested.
Our neighborhood is blessed
with good health generally, there
being very little sickness at this
time.
Mr J 0 Graham has put up a
cotton ginnery and is operating
three up-to-date gins.
Tuesday afternoon, September
21). two negroes, EJ Kinloch and
Sam Major had a difficulty at the
county line gate near Cams. The
dispute waxed warm and Kinloch,
who was cutting wood, threw'
his axe at Major. Major warded
off the blow and drawing his barlow
waltzed into Kinloch, slashing
him on the rich! ear and jowl.
Kinloch ran to his mother's house
nearby, got a gun and came back
after Major, who had meantime
?n?r?M tit thfi hnu>t? of his brother
in law, William Bradshaw, and
armed himself with a gun. As
Kinloch approached I he house
William Bradshaw tried to quiet
Major and end the trouble, when
Kin lock came up to the edge of
the yard and fired his gun at the
house. Fifteen No 5 shot?most
of the load?struck Bradshaw, the
peace-maker. Dr Wayne Gamble
was sent tor and extracted most
of the shot, none ot which mule a
very serious wound.
The next morning Kinloch went
back to But Ishawas house and it is
supposed that alter talking over
the matter all the parlies to the
affair ag evi to bury the hatchet
and smoke the pipe of peace or
the cheroot of friendship, whichever
happened to be the most
handy. F.
