Postponed but the Controversy

their mouths on the subject. lie
doesn't seer* to know what is being
done and said in his own town;

of that petition that was gotten

when Mr Chandler was in office.
He sa.vs he doesn't think any one
in town has made anv arrangements
to get a lot to rent to country
people for hitching purposes.
Only thinks this, but doesn't know
it. He says the peop'e of Kiugstree
wouid not sloop Iq snch a
thing as 1, and as some others,
seem to . think they would do.
This is more than he knows. There
are as good people in Ivingstree as
any other town, and there are
people there that will do anything
that is not prohibited bv the laws
of the land. He did not say that
he thought the people of Ivingstree
would not stoop to such thing, but
says he knows it. This is also
more thai) h.j knows, and he must
remember that he doesn't know
all as he did wot know tha the peo
pie ofKingstree had gotten up a
petition right there at hi n for the
purpose of keeping h >rses out of
the court house square. He says
they have not opened their mouths

been doing all this with theii

This is true, but they have not
been intruded on yet bv people
being compelled to hitch horses
in their lots, and have them pullin?5?down
their lences and eating
the baik off their trees. When
this starts the country people will

merchants ami people generally
that have lots that could be used
for hitching purposes, and goes so
far as to say positively thai they
would not charge for the use of
these lots. It's not reasonable to
suppose that anyone would fix up
racks on their lots with no other
motive in view than to accommodate
the public. Just suppose
these lots were fixed up for hitching
placs, such an arrangement
would not last long, as the owners
would be liable to die, or qait^
business, or move away, and then
tiie property would change hands,
which would mean the end of the
hitching in these lots, and the
title ot the court house square will
remain the same.
I don't think anvone is losing
any sleep on the subject. I h:>d
not thought ot such a thing, but
suppose that Mr Alsbrook is the
one thai is losing much sleep on
the subject, and would suggest
that he take a night's rest, so that
he may get a betier understanding
and he will then learn that the
people of Ktngstr-^e have ha I
their mouths open on the subject,
and that they will not agree to

purposes without compensation
of some kind, especially for the
country people they don't know.
Mr Alsbrook says uDon't let a few

that the people of King-dree
make money their God, and that

low things, and some of these
same men are the ones that are
pushing this matter. Mr Alsbrook
said the idea of horses catching
diseases at livery stables. Everybody
that has any judgment
knows that at a liverv stable where
horses are being constanty brought
in, every lot is liable lo have a
few among them that have distemper,
and it is not impossible
for them to have glanders, as this
is the case sometimes. lie spoke
of keeping stock out in weather
unprotected. Why he must think
that when we go to King<jree we
stay there a week or so with our
horses tied out in the night air
and rain, when we on'v stay a
few hours and often we only stay a
few minutes.
We don't propose lo have everv
thing done that the grand jury
recommends. Perl a >s they could
get no rest until they did something
of this kind, as there are
some men with shrewd tongues
who are interested in this matter,
and (hey know how to plead to a
jury, and I suppose only one side
I of the case was represented to the
jury, which was enough tocau<e
them to make an error. As to the
county supervisor and county
commissioners carrying this
recommendation out. I don't think
they will do it if they care to serve
another term.
Oi course Hamilton had many
friends, and a monument to him

would be a very popular thing;
but 1 cannot see why some other
place would lint do as we11 as he
hi ml the roil ft house, remaps
the monument on tite court house
square would help to kill out the
opposition to the court house
fence, and as soon as the fence is
built, the question of building the
monument would die out; and I
think if Mr Alsbrook is really in
earnest abou' the building of a
monument to Gen Hampton, he
would propose a more suitable
place for its erection.
Will conclude by saying to the
country people to look out for Mr)
Alsbrook's vefv popular luiie, as
it may deceive you. a id I flunk
it a fiood plan to put this question
belore the candidates lor'county
commissioners and lor supervisor
