Mr Ed Cars ten has been confined to his room with chills and fever for the past few days. One of our popular voting men has recently invested in an elegant new '-H. M. T." top buggy. Look out, girls. Messrs T B Johnson and R I) Mills, two of our handsome and eligible young men, visited Lake City fSunday. Must be some attraction over there lor our young friends. A good many frotn Cades went to Lake City Sunday to pay their last respects to our departed county treasurer, Mr K D.Rollins. This writer has been informed that the bridges that span the public causeway at Broad Swamp near Mr E J Smith's, are again in a bad condition. Mr T S Smith, while riding on horse back over one of these . bridges the other night ,went through on account ol a defective piece of material and was thrown from his saddle, falling several feet. Fortunately no damage was done, except the bie iking of one ot the stirrups ot the saddle. In order to save some one from possible injury to himself or his horse and the county an attendant law-suit, it would be advisable for those in authority to { give this matter their early attention. V ? Koa 1 iict _ X UUS VUIICsyuiiucuv uno jiijx V turned fiom an extended visit to Florence, Wilmington and other points. He is glad to state that he had a delightiul tine while on this tup. I It would be superfluous for me / to say anything about the progress of our town, as that subject was so ably covered by UX" in his article in last week's issue. t lVAMlOE. BENSON BRIEFS. A Moon-light Picnic and Other Matters. i Benson, September 14:?The se- 1 ries of meetings ut the Methodist ' church closed on the first Sunday. 1 Rev William Roof, the pastor, con- ' ducted the services aud pi cached { some excellent sermons. Good congregations were in attendance and i much interest was manifested in the I meetings. The new church is ( finished on the outside, but there is j considerable work on the iuterior | yet to be done. I Mrs J B Chandler has returned | from a visit to her daughter, Mrs | George Barr, at Greenville. i Mrs W S Grayson came home | Sunday from a visit to Waycross, j Ga. ( Mr Robert Hudson, who has been < making his headquarters at Mr J G McCollough's during the past month, has returned to his home at Timmonsville. On the evening of the 8th inst. < quite a crowd of young* folks assem bled at the residence of Mr W S Grayson for a moon-light picnic. The time was passed in social chat interspersed with games, etc. Refreshments consisting of ice-cream, cold lemonade and cake Mere served during the evening. After several hours of uninterrupted enjoyment the crowd dispersed with pleasing recollections of a well spent evening. W. 8. G. The Kingstree (irailed Schon opened on Monday with 130 pu pils and the number will soot grow larger. This is the largesi * ?? i? i. _ j opening cue scuuoi lias trver nuu Also I he friends and patrons o the school aie very optimistic over the piospects for this year'i work, 'idle corps of teachers hat been increased to live members thereby making it possible Ic give the higher grades more attention and time than has been allotted to them heretofore. Then too, a tenth grade lias been added to the curriculum and pupils can now be prepared directly for the sophomore class of the best male and temale colleges of the State, The people of our community are to be congratulated upon having access to such school advantages right here in our own town. The following teachers comprise the faculty: Miss Agnes Erckmann, Charleston?1st and 2nd grades; Miss Bertha Wells, Orangeburg?3rd and 4th grades; Miss Luna Tnbble, Due West? ft'li iirAHfii' Mr A IPT Fewel), ltock Hill?7th and 8th grades; Mr Erne>t Wiggftis, Holly Hill?9th and 10th grades. The course of study for the highest grades has been enlarged and strengthened materially. This being possible from the fact that, Mr Fewell hah taken a part of the work formerly done by Mr Wiggins, who has new work owing to the addition of the tenth grade. Parents in Williamsburg can have I heir children thoroughly prepared for gdod college work. In ruder to encourage a liberal patronage from those who are nol near good schools, the trustees charge a'very small tuition lee lor those pupils who do not live in ihe school district. This opportunity is a golden one to boys and iiirls who cannot go to college, but who are anxious to obtain a thorough high school training, i'hc preparation for college is thorough, broad ami advanced? the best to be obtained in onr r/hole conni v. Kingstree should be, and is, proud of her school; snd the capable and conscientious teachers who are working <o hard to increa-e its usefulness, not only to the immediate community, but to the county at large, deserve the active and spirited support of all patrons, so that they might be able to do the greatest amount of good. Parents are making a gross mistake to keep their children back from attending now. Later >n they cannot enter the regular irndtfs and each day's delay tends >hat much more to disorganize the work of the classes. Then, oo, pupils lose enormously when they do not come every day. Irregular attendance discourages the pupil, disorganizes the classes, lives unnecessary work to teachers, and hurts the school generally. FEARFUL ODDS AGAINST HIM. Bedridden, alone and destitute. Such, in brief was the condition of an old soldier by name of J J Havens, Versailles, 0. For years he was troubled with Kidney disease and neither doctors nor medicines gave him relief.
