Richard D. Rollins.
The death of County Treasurer
B D Rollins last Friday was heartrending
in its suddenness and it is
no exaggeration to say that all Williamsburg
mourns the loss of one
of her best beloved sons. The many
expressions of sorrow that sprang
spontaneously from 60 many hearts
bear strongest testimony to the genuine
love borne by his fellow-men
toward the man who impressed sc
strongly and indelibly his personality
upon all with whom he came in
contact.
His genial, amiable temperament;
his rare business tact; his willingness
to accommodate; his ready sympathy?all
these and more were the
cterling qualities so closely woven in
warp and woof of the fabric of his
beinp as to command the love and
/ u
esteem of all who knew him.
As an official?capable, courteous
. and obliging under all conditions
and circumstances?his place will
be hard to fill, and in the hearts of the
many who enjoyed his friendship
there is an aching void that time
can only in a measure heal. His
philanthropy and benevolence extended
to all, rich and poor alike
sharing his regard. The life of such
a man is like a precious ointment,
whose fragrance is exhaled long
after the vessel that contains it hu*
been broken. In like manuer will
his deeds of kindness and altruism
linger lovingly iu the memory of
those whose lives were made brighter
and happier by having known him,
May he rest in peace.
Mortuary.
Died, on Thursday, September 10,
1903, Mary Cantey feagin, aged live
months and two weeks, daughter of
Mr and Mrs Andrew Ragin.
"The Lord hath need of this floweret
sweet,"
The Reaper paid, and smiled;
And we gave her up in tears and
pain
The child we most did love.
But we know we shall pee her
again.

E'litor County Record:?
As much has been said about tJ
. "iron fence" around the court hou
by Mr Siugletary, AJr J D Dani
and yourself, I wish to make a fe
remarks al60.
To the best of my recollection
1 was in the county superv isor's oPic
J it may have been two or three yea
. previous to this time (as I don't r
member the exact date), but the
' was something said about a petitii
I being gotten up by the people
> Kingstrec to the county commi
> sionei s, or to the county supervisor, I
' preveut this horse hitching on tl
court house square, and the unde
, standiug that I got from the per3(
with whom I was talking at th;
time was that Mr Chandler did n
intend to notice it. This was oi
' of the best things that Mr Chandl
. ever did, and just what every coun
supervisor should do, if he wishes
look ?f?er the interest of the majorii
oi tne country peupic.
It is the opinion of others as we
as myself that the Kingstree peop
are pushing this scheme, and th
there are vacant lots there that cou
be, and would be lixed up for hitel
ing purposes. These lots would 1
rented as a money making busine
for some of them. Such action j
, this would compel the country pe
pie to carry their horses to the di
fereut livery stables, where th<
would be liable to catch one, or a
the diseases which horses are subje
to.
> There are other things in Kin<
stree near the court house that ai
one hundred times worse than hitcl
ing horses on the court house squar
and I think Mr Daniel is makiug
mountain out of a mole hill. T1
worst things that ever get on tl
court, house squareare the drunk me
and the politicians, who never li
. the people rest for electioneers
them?the iron fence would not ket
them out.
What do we waut with seats o
, the court house square? When p
drive twenty gve or thirty miles, i;
you suppose that we would ha\
time tn sit, on the scats and attend I
our business and get back home tl
1 same day? These seats would ben
fit no one except the loafers ac
politicians, who corner the counti
people on election years to have
1 talk.
That monument of which M
Daniels speaks would look much be
1 ter if placed in the middle of ti
street in front of the court hou
, door. It could be placed in lii
' with the row of trees in the midd!
of the street, and would be out <
. the way, and also where everyboc
could see it. If the people of Kinj
! stree want the monument, I don
i think they would object to havir
it there.
Respectfully yours,
i 8. B. Gordon,
Lenud, S. C., Sept. 14, 1903.
