SEPTEMBER fO, r903. That Iron Fence. Apropos the iron fence around the Court house vard we commend the k"' ?^-broad-minded and patriotic utterances of Mr J D Daniel, whose letter we take pleasure in printing in this issue. While we realize that gv- a good many of our readers differ r with with us in this matter?and li ?re hare the highest respect for their opinions?we hare vet to hear an argument against the proposed # fence that will offset two points made by ilr Daniel, viz., the annoyance attendant upon the utilizing of the public square as a campingplace for all comers, and the more serious men&ce from a sanitary standpoint of turning into a cattle. pen the precincts of our temple of justice. Mr Daniel's suggestion as to the monument is an excellent one, and . should the fence be put up, we think that enough money can be raised to build the monument. With the f conditions that now obtain it would be idle to consider the erection of a monument, as it would, even if enclosed with a small iron fence, but emphasize the ill-kempt features of the surroundings. . As to hitching places for our ountry friends?and far be it from ftg to deprive them of that necessity? proper provision should and would 1 be made. Other towns not favored ?yrith coturt bouses have such accommodation provided and Kingstree can well afford to do the same should the necessity arise. Tift strand Jury has. twice recom uended that the court house grounds be enclosed, and unless some good reason be forth-coming we think the recommendation ought to be carried oat. The Graded School. The next session of Kingstree Graded school begins Monday. The ^^^ronpects for a successful school year are most encouraging?brighter, - * * -? in tact, tnan ever oeiure m m-: motory of the town. With the present faculty, which the trustees have been at pains to select with the utmost regard for suitability and capability, we confidently look forward to a distinct advancement along intellectual lines that will place Kingstree well to the front in the great educational wave that is wsistlessly sweeping over the country. Among other improvements in the school a tenth grade has been added as a connecting link between the high school and the college. This department will be under the personal .direction of the superintendent, ajid.especial pains will be taken*with pupils who are preparing for college. Another teacher has . been added to the faculty, making fi five in all, and every grade is in charge of a (-artfully trained ami expei iei:c? d instruetor. However widily tiny may ilithr m othei matters, we cai ..at believe that there is an imiiwduil in town wh > at. heart is antagonistic to the school. "In a substantial way our people have put themselves on record as supporters of the school and it now behooves them to stand by it and give it their moral and practical aid and encouragement. Without this help the teachers, however competent and energetic they may be. caunot do either themselves or the school full justice. Let every parent co-operate with the teachef in the home circle. Do this and the child will reap the full benefit of the instruction he receives. The first step in this direction is to Send the child to school the first day. This enables the teacher to make a systematic beginning. Punctuality and regularity of attendance arc absolutely essential to the best results in school work. Help the teachers aud you will be well rewarded by their increased efficiency in the instruction of your children. Death of Miss Virginia Waiker.
