Perhaps there are people who are laughing at those farmers in Florence /county who met some days ago ih convention and resolved to boycott the American Tobacco Co. And when the greatness of the trust, on # i one hand, and the comparative insignificance of the farmers, on the other hand, are considered it does tend to amnse. But no matter if it does provoke smiles. It it the right step. Something has to be done to check this dangerous trust. It threatens to rain the tobacco industry in Soath Carolina. Just at a time when the farmers were con grata la ting themselves on having found something besides cotton for a money crop this monster comes *loog and threatens to destroy the 1 industry. The situation is serious. The American Tobacco Co. has i millions of dollars and can control i the market entirely. It can pay what it wishes for tobacco. Something will have to be done. It is no , t use to depend on legistation to < ry ^handle the trusts. The trusts con- ; .dfcol legislation. The only thing ( vJJmt can be done is along the line ' * suggested by the Florence corven, tiorf^Wiz: refuse to bny the goods of , thetrifVt. The farmers, would they work-in Hudson, could break every , 1 J . trust in ttfg* conn try. rney couia conttolthe }>rlce of cotton and tobacco and all other product* of the , farm. Other people Btand together. t Why can't the farmers? Let the , farmers of Williamsburg follow the example of our Florence neighbors and gradually the inovemeut will , spread and cease to'be amusing. I* y??? ?mmmmmm?mm A Novel Educational Idea. Attention is called to the educa tional campaign which;i?4mentioned in another column of Thk Record. ' It is announced that on 'the 6th of September v a ' company of distinguished college professors will be < in Kin?stree to address our people on the question of education. These gentlemen are representatives of the several colleges and fitting schools owned and controlled by the Methodist cliurch. The idea is a new one. heretofore each college and fitting school has sent its representative out alone to present the claims of education, but the happy idea of an educational campaign in which all should appear has been adopted, and during the remainder of the vacation period the representatives of the colleges and schools will go together and address the people on 1 this vital quest'ou. Each man mentioned in connection with the campaign is a good speaker and thoroughly acquainted with the subject to be discussed. Dr Daniel is president of the Columbia Female College, and is a live college man. He -* : ' ' ' ' J * 1ms projected greut improvements on ... c^cilulii^ III tV thousaud dollars on his building. ProfeKsorClinkscal"s represents Wofford cottage, and hn few eqnah [:\ a ip*ai.<r. Prof's ;or Lander cornea in the interest of the new Lander college, which has been moved from Williauigtou where it has Lud a fine renutation for many wars to Greenwood and magnificently equipped and endowed. He is an up to date college man and a good speaker. Profs Dupre and Sheridan represent the the two fitting schools w hich Wofford College owns. The Methodist church, which from the beginuinghasstrfcssed education, has entered upon a decidedly vigorous campaign within the last year or two, and this particular idea is only one expression of its enterprise and energy. The meeting here on the 6th will be a feast to the town and surrounding country, and all who can should attend. We need to be aroused on this question. Porttsng ttierc to nn nmn in flip country who is happier thau Senator John T Morgan, of Alabama. For many years the great ambition of this great man has been to induce the United States to build the Nicaranga canal. He has made this his one great work. The Republican congress, however, preferred the Panama route and almost broke the heart of Morgan. He had given np] the fight and doubtless thought his great plan was eternally buried. Now comes the news that the Columbian congress refuses to adopt the treaty which would make the Panama route possible, and the only thing left for the President and his party to do is to fall into Morgan's plan. Doubtless Senator Mor ?1111 1CCII jvuu^ a^aiu. Why not have a building and loan I association in Kiugstree? The old j town has opened one eye from her long sleep, and a number of evidence* of progress are apparent. Vfhf ihould we not try another eye? Why not organize this association to enable men of small means to build their own homes? 2no town will prosper when men hare to rent their homes. There is a pride in the possession of a home that stimulates men to a town pride. Nearly all of the growing towns in the State owe their growth largely to the building and loan idea. Organize such an association and handsome homes will go up in Kingstree. Suppose we try it. Won Winthrop Scholarship. TheWinthrop Scholarship from Williamsburg county has been awarded to Miss Bessie Harper as the result of the competitive examination held here on July 10. Miss Harper is a graduate of Kingstree Graded school and is withal a very bright and studious young lady. The fact that she won this scholarship over seven competitors speaks well for her intellectual training and attainments. ? A Sad Recall for Mr Qause.
