The South Carolina College.
The South Carolina College is round
tng out the flrst century of its existence
and will celebrate its centennial in Janvary,
1906. The College was chartered
iu 1801 and opened for active work in
January. 1806. It owes its existence to
a patriotic purpose, the education of
^ All the youth of the State at a common
1 banter, "in order to promote the in'
Struct ion. the good order and the har Vt
.mony of the whole community," and it
was built from a portion of the prok?
ceeds of a reimbursement made by the
United States to South Carolina for ex penses
incurred in the Revolution. During
the century that is closing the Col
' lege has contributed largely to the
statesmanship. the patriotism, the

that have prevailed in South Carolina
and her slater States. The roll of Collage
Alumni contains the names of men
"who have become noted in all the purV
aults of life, both in peace and war.
The exigencies of the struggle between
the States closed the college in 1853,
and the buildings were used a-"- hospitals
for sick and wounded Confederaies.
But as soon as peace was restored the
Institution \v;.s reopened by the "Orr
government" and enJo><-d several years
of ?uccees until it was ovei turned during
the lladieal regime, itincc 18M1, however,
the college has been continuously
open, and has educated hundf-ds o?
young men and a number of young
women, who for some yeais have been
permitted to partake of Its advantages
Originally the College was known so

, The Oallcge is situated at the capita!
of the 8tate and affords to th? studmt
opportunity for studying the workings
of the government in a duect way. It
is accessible from all paita of the State
and Is in a healthful locality. The religious
advantages are exceiHion.il because
each of the principal denominations
has a prosperous congregation in
<Columbla. Expenses art moderate.
There is a suite of three rooms for each
pair of students, watiu in winter and
well ventilated in summer. A large
[campus, a fine gymnasium and an exccHpnt
athletic field afford ample opportunity
for exercise.
The College la increasing in usefulness
and in prosperity with the increased
prosperity of the State, and the
prospects are that with the new century
Wis Institution will surpass the admirable
record K has already made.

Socastee, August 10.?Well, Mr
"Editor, The Record is a most, welcome
visitor over here. It is just
like meeting an old friend with a
j? budget of news from Williamsburg.
We moved to Horry last January
and it was our lot get among good
Christian people, who gave us a
hearty welcome.
We have one of the best Sundayschools
I have ever attended, and,
have just had a good ten days meeting
conducted by Rev A W Gatlin,
our old Johnsonville pastor.
Crops here are generally good,
although they have suffered some
what from the dronth.
We are all highly pleased with
onr new home, though there is a tie
% that viijl ever bind me to old John'V
Tille, the beloved home of my childhood

SUICIDE PREVENTED.
The startling announcement that '
a preventive of suicide had been die- i
covered will interest many. A run <
down system, or despondeucy invariably
precede suicide and something
1ms been found that will preveut
that condition which makes suicide*
likely. At the first thought of self 1

being a great tonic and nervine will

the system. It's also a great Stomach, j
