Brief Records. What's the mutter with an educational rally for Williamsburg? This year's tobacco crop is indeed . the "golden weed"?to the trust. The negro iu.the navy seems to he us burning a question as the "nigger in the wood pile". The State Farmers' iustitnte and the State Agricultural and Mechan ical Society are in session at Clemson College this week. The identity of the man who tired : the first gun of the Civil War seems to be as nebulous as that of the historic individual who struck Billy Patterson. Judging from the verbosity of the society columns of the Sunday newspapers, the social swim must be as thickly peopled as the surf at a popular sea-side resort. A correspondent from Beaufort reports corn-stalks seventeen feet tall, bearing eight ears of corn tq,the talk. Mr Zack Drake, of Marlboro, will have to look to his laurels. The American Tobacco Co. seems j determined to squeeze the life-blood out of the helpless farmers. It *4pightbeas well for the trust to remember that there's such a thing throttling the goose that laid the golden egg. Stripped of superfluous phraseology President Roosevelt's views on lynching aie identical with the doctrine of a great majority of Southern newspapers: "Speedy trials and prompt punishment of men guilty of heinous crimes". It's a pity the way those railroads and express and telegraph companies pester Senator Tillman with tenders of passes and franks. His excuse for taking them is characteristic: "It is customary for members of Congress to accept them and we are all Slaves to custom." i Last week a negro womau in Colleton county killed her two children by cutting off their heads with an axe. She claims that a dog came along and told her that unless sne killed her children the world would be destroyed. The role of seer is a new one for a canine even in dog days-. * H C Hollow-ay, the slick scoundrel who did the Lake City truckers out of their hard-earned dollars last season, must be a passed master 'in the art of dwindling. It's a long lane that has no turning, however, and it is just possible that Mr Hollo way may yet come to grief while iudulgiug in his favorite sport of ^wtfckiug lobsters". T % V ' mm* 1 ! " A Cbnnce for a Young Wan, Why is there no applicant. from this couii y for ti??* Nov Normal Scholarship in thi- South Carolina College? Is it because every man teacher in the country has already hot/i a college education and a ' * * A" 1 thorough training in -\oni;ui methods? Deficiency in eith-r would justify u teacher in spending a year pursuing the special teachers' course' offered by the South Carolina College, the more so since the Legislature has for this purpose provided from each county a scholarship remitting all fees and paying: $40 toward living expense*. Allowing for board at $8 or $10 a month for nine months, and laundry, books, and railroad fare, the scholarship student would have to raise hardly more than $50 in older to avail himself of the great benefits of a year's professional study in the splendid Normal Department of the tfouth Carolina College. The' applicant must be 19 years of age, or within a few months of that age. It is preferred that he should have already had some experience as a teacher, and, other things being practically equal, the teacher-appli cant will be-selectcd in prelerence to competitors who have never taught. However, any young man desiring the scholarship in order to take the course with a view to becoming a teacher should apply, as he stands a a chance of winning, even though he may never have taught yet Write to Professor Patterson Wurdlav or President Benjamin Sloan, Columbia, S. C. The scholarship is good for one year, with a chance of renewal. There has been provided a special course of study, different from the regular college classes, arranged with special referer.ee to the needs of the pul lie schools, and particularly the country schools. It is practically an extension of the Summer School courses?a nine months' uorrnal school for men teachers, similar to what the Winlhrop Training School in "Columbia used to he for women teachers. It is the beginning" of a new era in South Carolina schools?a demand that men teachers us well as women ^teachers shall have professional training. The young men taking this course will soon go to the front in school work. A course of methods lor our schools necessarily takes the student over elementary studies and grounds him thoroughly in the matter along with the method. Thus it is not beyond the capacity of a young man of poor technical preparation, provided he have maturity and natural ability, especially when he has had experience trying to teach. Therefore, this one year teachers' course with its forty-one scholarships affords to young men of poor advantages, but ambition to teach, a rare opportunity to educate themselves more thoroughly and at the same time lit themselves to be better teachers and rise in their profession. Yet the course may be pursued by the college graduate who has not r had thorough training in the principles and methods of teaching?and in all likelihood is not master of the elementary branches possibly which he studied under poor teachers before he went to college, or studied so long ago that he has forgotten them. The examination for the above scholarshp will be held in the court house on Friday, August 21. Anyfurther information desired will be furnished by the county superintendent of education.
