A Belligerent Negro Tamed? The Tobacco Market?Other Interesting News. Mr J R Tobias of Charleston, who is president of the Lake City Hardware Co., was in town one day last day last week on business. Edwin L Hirsch Esq., came up from Kings tree Thursday for an hour or two. Mrs Sarah Hurwitz of New York, < is spending some time with her daughter, Mrs Epstein. . . # Hon J Monroe Johnson of Maiion, was noted here not many days ago. We hope the town council will not let the year go by without putting oat a lot of shade trees. We bare some fine old trees, and some * nice yoang ones, but we need more. Nothing adds more to the beanty of a town or to the comfort of its inhabitants than plenty of shade trees Kingstree, which is one of the prettiest towns of its size in the State, owes much of her charm to her oaks, elms, cottonwoods and sycamores. Mrs Aunie Flake, born Griniskv, k of Council, N. 0., -is visiting her sister-in-law, Mrs LI1 (irnnsley. Judge W ? Hanua was seen on our streets Saturday. Mr B S Smith of Bloomingvale, one of our county's staunchest citisens, paid our town a visit a' day oi two ago. Editor Wolfe spent Friday in tows. He was impressed with the inarch of improvement here and did not hesitate to say so. On one of his fntnre trips we hope to show him around in a trolley car. Rot T J Rooke went to Conway and preached in the Baptist church Sonday, filling the appointment of the pastor Rev D H Crosslaud, who i? assisting in the series of meetings here. If aoaie of the farmers would be a little more careful with their tohacoo the prices would be much better. Some tobacco that is put upon the market is so full of strings that it goes off for almost nothing, maybe as low as fifty cents per hundred. If the strings were picked oat the same tobacco would bring a good deal more. We do not say this upon our own authority but upon the authority of experienced tobacco men. Clean your tobacco. Put it in the very best 6hape you can. Yon will be more than repaid for your trouble. The stockholders of the bank held a meeting Tuesday, adopted by-laws and transacted other business necessary to put everything in good shape for business. The annual meeting was fixed upon the third Tuesday in July of each year. Baby carriages answer very well for an ordinary kid to each carriage. But they are not adapted to this town. It will be a siiock to the community to learn that Mr II Van Epps missed Thursday's excursion. This was tin? first time he has failed. The prices during the first half of last season should not be taken as standards of comparison. At that time the trusts were iu a death struggle and the market was tremendously inflated, far above anything before known and above anything we shall probably see again. All the big concerns Mill be represented within eight to ten days. Then an advance may be expected, /but nothing like last seaeon's extravagant figures need be looked for anyway. To give an idea of last week's prices we cite a few sales: Mr J T DnBose sold a lot for 7, 81, 81 101 and 431 cents per pound. Mr Priggers realized 21c for scrap. For the balance of his load he got 5i, 8 and 12 cents. Mr W II DuBose received as high as 14 cts for a pile. There were some other sales at each of the warehouses equally "good as these. Mr J M Kennedy and a negro named Willie Burgess got into a difficulty Saturday, in which Mr Kennedy received two severe blows, one on the head and one on the arm, and the negro got a load of shot.
