The South Carolina College j
for Teachers.
j Although nearly approaching its cen- '
tennlal unnlversary, the South Carolina :
(College shows none of the decrepitude ;
of old age, but rather Increasing signs I
of vigorous life. A new departure or i
creat Importance to the College and to !
the State has Just been inaugurated.'
For some years the College has had a
department of pedagogy, for the train- |
ing of teachers; but last winter, for the
first time, the Legislature created a
number of endowed normal scholarships,
one for each county. It is the
intention of the Trustees and Faculty"
to set these scholarships u;-.on a high .
plane, and to seek thereby to qualify
superior young men for positions of
leadership and Influence tn our public <
schools. However largely women may j
be employed as teachers, the work of
superintendence, direction and control ;
must continue to be most Largely In the
hands of the men: and It is to supply,
these teachers of leadership and in-' , !
fluence. In the community as well as In" j,
the schools, that the College will chiefly j
aim. through these scholarships. Hence, j
no young man undtfi- nineteen years of

be given to these applicants who have
already taught with success for at j
least one year.
A special and technical course of j
study has been established, on a high' I
yet practical plane; and It Is Intended j
that this department shah be worthily
entitled to be called a "Collage for1,
Teachers." All the work will be dis- i
tlnctlvely normal, and apart from the. '
regular College clasat-A The Trustees !
and Faculty feel sure that in preparing
a body of strong and well equipped !
men teachers the College will eld in I
supplying one of the most Important1
needs of the State, 'i'hey hope, also, j
thnt this work, in ltg success and its;
results, may meet with such public approval
as to leata hereafter to Us still
further enlargement.
Circulars have been issued giving the
details of regulations and Course at
study.
The present session, now nearly i
ended, has been very encouraging. Not: !
a ripple has disturbed the internal] {
peace of the College. The now Preei- !
dent has won golden opinions, and hnai ]
more than maintained the contldcnas; j
and affection gained tn his long service \
as professor. The friend* of the C<?1- j
lege iooh hopefully forward to the continued
success and iocroased usefulness" '
of this venerated Institution, which will' i
