Cruelty to Animals.

It is to be hoped that that item
in the recent presentment of the
grand jury in this connty bearing on
cruelty to animals will attract the
notice of our citizens. It will be
recalled that the grand jury presented
Mr Nachman for improperly
caring for some (15) or (20) mules.
. This is a matter that has been overlooked
in many communities. In
some places there are societies for
ih* nrevention of cruelty to animals.

Such a society is badly needed in
Kingstree. While we have a great
many fine horses and mules heieaboots
at the same time there are
some that are cruelly treated aud
improperly fed. The writer has
several in mind which should be
looked after. It is inhuman to neglect
or cruelly treat a defenseless
horse or mule. It would be the

proper thing to prosecute the owners
of such stock' and to releive the
poor animals by death. When an
animal has passed the point of usefulness
it should be killed not
forced to do the work of a sound,
strong horse or mule. Who will
act on this matter.?
The papers announce the arrival
in South Carolina of Mr Ralph D
Bppe. 'Mr Epps has been teaching
in the Phillipine Islands and it was
currently reported that he hsd left
there because Governor Taft was
displeased with his letters to this
country, which letters disclosed
some facts which the goverment
wished withheld from the public.
It turns out, however, that this report
was untrue and that Mr Epps
was in good graces of the Phillipiue
authorities. He publishes m the
State newspaper several complimen
cary letters \? ritten by bis superior
officers in the Islands. It will tie
. gratifying to Mr Epps friends in
Williamsburg to know that he did
not leave his work because he was
distasteful to his employers. >

folks are making a determined fight
indeed. If it goes up to the UtTited
