From Taft comes the news that
ant Brown, colored, was killed on
'hursday last, by a log train on the
reoigetown & Western R. R. The
egro was from Ashley Junction and

NEGRO DESPERADOES
Two Dusky RasCala terrorize Scranton
and Other Towns on the
r Coast l?rie.
The upper- section of the county
, from Scranton up, on the line of
the North Eastern It. R., has been
terrorized by two negro desperadoes.
Their names are John Richardson
and George Williams. On last Sun'
day they lauded in Scranton on
' tiain No. 40. They went at once to
1 work in their rapcality by breaking
! into the store of Mr Winslow Wright,
' and taking therefrom some tire arms,
viz: one breech loading shot gun,
' one army carbine riHle, and several
boxes of loaded shells. Having this
: equipment they proceeded toward
Florence, raidiug an orchard several
1 miles alK)ve Seranton and securing
' a'quantity of choice fruit. On Mon(
day morning they visited the tobacco
barn of a Mr Jordan, at Cowards,
and opened lire on a Mr Coward,
wounding him in the leg. This
was entirely without provocation.
Leaving this section they marched
northward and attacked a chicken
house, taking some fifteen chickens.
By this time companies of citizens
were formed to capture the men.
Before they caught them, however,
thev reached Kffimrhain and Wil
Hums offered hid chickens for sale in
a store. He was arrested * hile in
the store. Richardson siring the
plight of his companion sought
refuge in a nearby forest The

forest was surrounded by citizens,
and Mr Stephen Byrd, catching
sight of the scoundrel, emptied both
barrels of his gun in Richardson's
face. He was then easily bagged.
In his body were found no less than
200 small shot while in his face
and breast there were one hundred
and seventy five shot. The negroes
were carried to Florence and put in
jail. Richardson claims to have
come from Florida, but is well
known in Florence. Williams says
his home is in Orangeburg.

20th, and it is earnestly hoped that
a great number of teachers of the
couuty will be present on the opening
day. The courses of study have
been so arranged as to meet the
needs of the teachers of the county.
Arithmetic, Algebra, Pedagogy and
English will be taught, and the text

Buckler's Grammar, and a number
of the shorter English classics, beginning
with Evangeline, or soma

The English and Arithmetic will
be taught by Prof C R Banks, the
well-known Superintendent of the
Lancaster Graded Schools, while the
other branches will be taught by the
principal. We trust that teachers
will not harbor false ideas as to the
importance or the nature of these
summer schools and that we shall
have a large number of teachert
present We will try to make the
work interesting, and at the same
time, to give teachers some new
. ideas in methods.
This great summer school here is
a striking index of the desire of
teachers for better things. We have
2500 teachers present from nearly
every State in the Union, coming
from the high school up to the German
Aniversity.
