JULY. 9, 1903. : j Those folks over Lynch's River know a good thing when they see it. Florence connty is after 28 square mites of Williamsburg soil. They want that many miles this side of the river. Does this mean that they are short on good land? Twenty eight square miles of the kind of land that we have down bete in Williamsburg will go a long way toward averaging up the kind they have in Florence. There were two lynchiugs in one day in South Carolina hist week. And jnst across the line in North Carolina there was another. And in other sections there were a number of others. It is not a matter to be wondered at. When we see the ti- fearful weakness of the courts iii dealing with crime it is not hard to understand why lyuchiugs should occur. There are too many weak men in authority. The only way to stop lynching is to improve our ooarts, and have fewer continuances . and changes of venue. Some of the Florence papers and people are having a good deal to say ^alxrat the action of their graded school trustees in raising the salary of their snperintendant from $1000.00 to $1500.00. They say that this is the highest salary paid to any superiutendant iu the State. Well, may be it is, but they have the consolation of knowing that they have just ubout the best snperintendant in the State. Those who know snperintendant Mann and his I work believe that he has no superior in South Carolina as a graded school niau. lT 1 ===== ^ An intelligent and well informed gentleman visiting in Kingstree this week remarked to the writer that he considered Williamsburg the finest farhiing county in South Carolina. - In his opinion the lands in our county are superior to those of any other county in the State for general farming. This is what we have thought all the time, but we are glad to have an outsider of intelligence say so. The price of Williamsburg land > is low, and we should be glad to \ have good, substantial incomers to help us develope ?, , ./ s. tlie OKI county. ? "There is a disposition oil the part of the pipers of the State to make sport of the plan which Senator Latimer is advocating for the improvement of the public roads, v Whatever is said of the plan (and it v does seem to be a great undertaking) there should be only praise for the intention of the Senator. There is no doubt but that the greatest need ' of the country to-dav is better roads. .. There is nothing that will do more to advance the interests of the whole people than first class highways.
