Death of Mrs. P. A. Lewis.
I>ikI)?At the home of Mr Br.ulley
Cox, near Johusonville on July
2nd, 1903, Mrs P A Lewis, at the
age of 09 years 2 months and 4 days.
Mrs Lewis was born in Marion
County, S. C., she was the mother
of Mr Cox's wife who died some
years ago. Mrs Lewis went to
Georgia with Mr Cox and stayed
there about twelve years. Five
years ago they came back to Williamsburg.
Mrs Lewis was taken
last Thursday morning with what
was supposed to be heart failure and
died aliotit 1:30 o'clock, p. m. Her
remains were intercd at the Lake
Chapel Baptist church on Friday,
July 3rd, at 4 o'clock, p. in. of
which church she was a member.
The services were conducted by Rev
Daniel Duraut.

The Shelton Meeting Postponed.
The meeting announced for this
week in the Methodist church has
been jiostpoiied until next week.
The Rev Mr Shelton wired the RevMr
Ramsbottom that sickness in his
family prevented his coming this
week. He will com<? next, however,
and will preach during th&t week
in the Methodist church.
Mr Bounds Gives up Contract.
Mr SiliiQ Ron mis. who was civen
the contract for the new graded
school building has written the
trustees that he cannot do the work.
He gives as his excuse that he cannot
get the workmen for the brick
work in time to complete the building
within the specified time. The
trustees will find some one who can,
and the house will be built within a
reasonable time.
A Protracted Meeting.
Beginning Tuesday night the Rev
E C Bailey.pastor of the Presbyterian
church at Timmonsville,
preached in the Presbyterian church
here morning and night. Mr
Bailey is a strong preacher and his
sermons, it is hoped, will do niucn
good.
The Florence and Williamsburg Line.
It seems that Florence county
claims a part of this county, and to
settle the matter Mr Peter Gonrdin
and Mr E J Smith, representing
Williamsburg and Florence respectively,
will begin a survey within
the next week. Florence claims

Ball Game.
On July 4tb, the good people in
the neighborhood of Mr W F Kennedy's
enjoyed a good game of base
ball?There were a number of fair
sex on hand and delightful refreshments.
The contending clubs were
Kennedy's and Red Cross?The
score was 22 to 5 in favor of Kennedy's.
Bowen Bros, were the bat
tery for Kennedy's and Truluck and
Smith for Red Cross.
Twixt Scranton and Johntonville.
Tobacco curing is the order of the
day, all along the route you can
see men either filling barns or curing
the weed.
Cotton is looking fairly weell
though somewhat later than that of
other years.
Farmers are about laying by
their corn, except where they had
to plant over.
We have been having some very
warm weather for the past week.
Mrs Nettles of Leo has been
cjuite sick, but is very much improved
at this writing.

Mrs J B PuRant has gone to Columbia
to spend two or three weeks
with relatives. Columbia is Mrs
DuRant's old home.
Miss Annie Sutcliffe is in Charleston
for two or three weeks. She
went down the latter part of last
week.
Mrs W E Severance will go to
Laurinburg, N C, this week to visit
her relatives. ?
Miss Edna and Master Tom Bass
Covington of Pensacola, Fla, visited
relatives here last week. Miss Edna

About six months will he spoilt in
Europe.
Mr Eugene McCutehen came down
from Latta Friday and visited
friends and relatives until Monday
night when he returned home.
Dr W L Wallace came up from
Kingstree Saturday and spent two
days with Dr Johnson.
Dr R J McCube was here the latter
part of last week.
Mrs If Nachnmn and children
went down to Charleston Saturday
night. They will be away several
days.
Mr J S Howie has fitted up the
octagonal house on Acline avenue
next to the Planters' warehouse and
has opened up a restaurant in it.
Besides adding a room he built a
refrigerator for meats, fish, etc.
There is a good opening here for a
restaurant and we hope Mr Howie
will succeed iu his veuture.
Mrs J E Brunson and children
joined Mr Brunson here Sunday.
Mr Brunson hits been endeavoring to
secure a dwelling house here ever
since he was elected secretary and
treasurer of the Hardware Co, but
without success. They will board
for a while.
We stated u few weeks ago that

position of book-keeper for Messrs A

position but has reconsidered the
matter and asked, to be relieved. So
he will lot oome here. Mr S C
Morris has secured the position and
entered upon the discharge of his
duties.
Mr L M Belk went to Florence
Monday night on "toothsome" business.
The Hardware Co has the best fly
trap we have ever seen. It is based
on the principal that flies will not
travel down a perpindicular surface
but will invariably go upward. The
show windows are very large and
close. The window is opened by
raising a panel inside the store. To
operate the fly trap the panel is
raised just an inch or so. The flies
walk up to this opening and into the
window where they are imprisoned
securely as they will not go downward
to the panel opening. By
morning they are dead. Exactly
what kills them is not known. It is
supposed to be either heat or lack of
water. At any rate they die and in
quantities almost incredible. One
morning last week four pounds of
dead flies were taken from this window.
This trap may be seen in full
operation any day.

Here is a goed one: Dr Johnson
has some gold fish in his drug store.
Some of our people are not well
acquainted with this member of the
tri-be^ A few days ago a maa who
had never seen a gold fish before,
asked the doctor where they could
he caught and how. The doctor replied:
''The government has slocked .
all our rivers with them and you can
catch them in any of the rivers.
You must fish in a very deep place
and right 011 a saml bar and bait
your hook with a fig blossom."
Mr J W McCntchen went to Kingstroe
Monday.

A WOMANS WIT.
Daughter of Barnwell's Sheriff Braves
a Mob and Saves a Prisoner.
At a dance iu Barnwell county on
Saturday, Herbert Sanders was shot
by Seaborn Moore, who surrendered
himself and was put in jail.
Last night ten masked men went
to the jail, where they demanded
Moore, and being told by the
sheriff's daughter that he was at

church with her father, the sheriff,
they then demanded the keys of the
jail, which she told them she would J
get from the next room, and on returning
from the room she cams' j
armed and drawing a loaded weapon
she presented it and delied them,
thereby running them away.
In a short time the sheriff returned
from church and at once
got up a guard for the jail consisting
of the Mayor and many of our
best citizens. Nothing further took
ploce during the night and the town
is quiet to-day.?Florence Daily

Death of Mrs. Newell.
Mrs E B Newell died at her home
near Venters postoffice on Saturday,
July 4, 1903, and was buried at
Johnsouville church on Sunday fol- 1
lowing. Rev T B Owen conducted
the funeral service in the presence
o/ a large crowd of friends and relatives
of the deceased.
Mrs Newell had been in feeble
health for some time and her death,
though sad, was not unexpected.
She leaves a husband and live or six
children to mourn her loss.
Mrs Newell was a consistent member
of the Methodist church and an
earnest and faithful Sunday-sohool
worker. Her death is a, distinct
loss to the community.
A Pleasant Outing.
On July, 3rd. Mr and M rs P B 1
I Thorn gave a pleasant outing to a
number of young people in town.
It was in the nature of an excursion j
on Mr Thorn's boat, "The Nellie".
The party went up the river and
refreshments were'served on board *
the vessel?A landing was made and 1
numerous amusements were enjoyed.
Good music was dispensed by the
Kingstree Orchestra. The yonng ^
folks were delighted and put under
many obligations to Mr and. l|lrs P .
B Thorn and their beutiful daughters?Misses
Marie and Selraa.
A Small Fire. ^
Sunday night at 12 o'clock an
alarm of tire was sounded, aud it
was found that the engine house of
the Coast Line pumping station was
on fire. Fortunately the night was
was a calm one and the flames were
confined to the little pump house.
It was completely distroyed. Some"
damage was done to the tank and
the track. The company estimates
that $500.00 will cover the loss.
The house will be rebuilt temporarily.
It is the purpose of the railroad
to move the pumping station
near the river within the next few
months.
