o satisfy myself, I would like to
ook further into this matter. Then
f they are found to he correct, I will

One of Dewey's shells could not
lave exploded any sooner than it
ook Mr Kelley to fly in a rage of
nadness and rise from his chair,
nuke for the door (mistaking ine
or u coward) slum it shut, turn
he 1k)1 t, draw the key, put it
n his pocket and say, as he tapidly
no\ed into the adjoining room, "I'll
e that you'll 6ign it and that right
iow!"
I pat. like a statue in my sann* portion,
arms testing on the table,
'hair against the table, knees under
he table, a position, in order to rise,
equired a backward movement of at
east twelve inches. Mr Kellev re9
>
uained in that room not more than
if teen seconds, when he emerged
vith a hickory stick in his hand as
ie advanced using these words: "I
inppose you are armed?" I replied;
'I am not armed," iMr Kelley
i-uIItmI imniMli?telv lu'liind me.
ising words that indicated anyhjng
else but a "peaceable aud
tmicable settlement of that affair."
This caused me to turn my head and
ook up. I saw the stick raised its
ull height in the air, and I saw. too
:hat my head was the object aimed
it to receive that blow. Mr StYmand,
(who is a man) caught its
:orce while I at the 6ame time raised
ny arm to ward it off. At least four
>r five succeeding blows were made
before I could relieve myself of this
sitting position, but not a blow
anded on the object aimed at.
rt'hen I rose from my chair and awkward
position in which I was pluced,
Mr Kelley grappled, and I was
pushed against the table, and having
lost my balanee fell over Mr Kelley's
chair and landed with my left
side on the floor below. As I
reached the floor Mr Kellev was
astride of me his knee landing on
my right stomach, from which I am
suffering to day. He sat 011 my
right hip, my left arm being pinioned
nndcr my left side; he grasped
my left wrist with his left hand and
drove the blows into my face with
his right with all his rapidity of
motion and power that he could command.
On account of my helpless
condition, all of those blows were
effective except such as I warded off
with my right. Could I have ended
those blows right there? Yes; if
he was not too far gone from the
sphere of reason to have heeded
"the grand hailing sign of djstress."
Did I give it? Never! Tlio' it was
the only surviving friend I had in
that group. Mr Kdley, in the outset
of the affair, seeing an effort on
the part of Mr StAmaud to interfere,
said: "I command yon to let me
alone," It was more than Mr StAmund's
nature could stand to
stand by and see my head broken
with a hickory stick and that without
a cause. He caught one or two
more blows when Mr Kelley again
said: *'1 command you, sir, to let
me alone!" Mr StAmand obeyed.
Mr LeRoy Lee, who was not an employee,
could have stopped the whole
affair, but he offered no assistance.
After my face was beaten into a
pulp, Mr Kelley paused seeming to
relent. Mr Lee said: '-That will do
now, Captain. Let him up, mav be i
be will sign it now."
These facts tell of that "friendly
meeting."
When that famous certificate was
igain presented for my signature,
tho' it did not contain facts, tho'
misleading, tho' type-written and
prepared before I ever entered tnat
jffice, I signed it. Some one once
?id: "All that a man hath will he
jive for his life." I con Id do nothng
less.
Bnt I wish now to say to the pubic
as I am not now under Mr Keller's
power, that the examination of
hose books was a farce. Qnly Mr St\.mand's
were produced from i>c,'ember
last to (late and that the
itatenient signed after a bloody fight
vas not niv statement at all, but the
itatement of Mr John A Kelley.
Aud now, my frieuds, don't rise iu
frimghteous indignation and couiemri
me for not striking back. I
vas in the power of another, who
ras surrounded by his friends.
[ have told the truth, and nothing

WORST OF ALL EXPERIENCES.
Can anything be worse than to
feel that every rn.nnte will be your
last? Such was the experience of
Mrs S H Newson, Decatar, Ala.
"For three yrars" she writes, "I enendured
insufferable pain from indigestion,
stomach and bowel trouble.
Death seemed inevitable when
doctors and all remedies failed. At
leugth I was induced to try Electric
Bitters and the result was miraculous.
I improved at once and now
I'm completely recovered." For
Liver, Kidney, Stomach and Bowel
troubles Electric Bitters is the only
medicine. Only 50c. It's guaranteed
by W L Wallace, Druggist.
It's foolish to cast your hread
upon lhe waters when they are
so many hungry men to whom
you might hand it.
