THE GOVERNOR'S APPEAL.
f : '
* * Help Asked for Distressed Mill
Operatives.
uTo the People of South Carolina:
An awful calamity has be
fallen I be people of Clifton and
* Pacolel, whereby not only has a
* fearfnl loss of life occurred, fifty
people having been drowned and
500 men, women and children
been rendered homeless and 4.000
thrown out ol employment at
* Clil'ton. While no loss of lilt
occurred at Pacolet,' nearly a;*
many will be out of employment
and at least there will be great
suftering there also. Such a catastrophe,
coming with such suddenness
and without warning,
places these people totally without
means and without shelter.
. Local aid is Hot sufficient to oveicome
the great devastation and
uffering and great hardships.
Even death may result unless
oromot aid is extended. Iirepre

eentative citizens being at these
places and who are familiar with
the circumstances have informed
Ii me that assistance is urgent and
requested me to call upon the
people of the State to come to the
rescue, in order that further and
more serious suffering may be
prevented. I feel that it is only
necessary to let the hue condition
be known in order that the
generous hearts of the people of
the State may be touched to a
quick reejK)nse. The' people have
never'failed in accordance with
our ability; however small it may
be, but above all let it be prompt.
