The fantastic wooden objects which come from the Far East ami are known as tea-root carvings have long ocon the basis of a prosperous industry in the populous city of Foo-Chov.*. Strictly SJ)C!lK!Up[, TCU IKIUlf J.> ?i ui^uvuivit Some of the carvings are made from old tea roots ami tea trunks, Inu the vast majority, nine-tenths at least, are made from the roots and trunks of hard wood trees. The carvings are almost invariably made in two parts, a pedestal and one or more human figures titted to the latter by pegs and holes. The former is made from a root and the latier from a trunk. The roots are selected with considerable care. They must he comparatively free from dry ror. decay and worm holes, and must possess a rude symmetry. They are cleaned, scrubbed and scraped and sawed to about the desired size. Then the artist with chisel, gouge, knife and pincers removes rootlets and roots until the figure is completed. Tilt sinfpiost design is a throe-legged pedestal, of which the base is a rough cylinder of wens and knohs. Any number of legs may lie used. A curious specimen seen by the writer in the iintei Yokohama, has tiftv legs. while the body lins been so treated as to suggrst a horny centipede. A second type of pedestal is the mushroom. A third type is an animal form, such as the ljuffalo. tiger, unicorn, elephant or dragon. A collector in this city has one which Is a clover suggestion of a hippopotami! yawning. It is about eighteen inches long, six inches thick and twelve high. The figures are conventional antiques, beggars and savages. At times the face is a portrait, real or conventional. of a famous personage. Carvings of this sort are rare. , Nearly always the chisel is guided by humor or satire. If it he a saint who is depicted, the look of piety or suffering is replaced by a leer or drunken grimace. If it be a warrior, every limb and muscle is molded so as 10 suggest decrepitude or a de>ire to run away. By a decision of the City of London Court, English newspaper proprietors, in the eye of the law, are manufacturers, and as such do not infringe on the Lord's Day observance act by publishing Sunday papers. This important and somewhat curious decision came up through a suit brought by Lloyds' Weekly to recover payment for Sunday papers delivered to a country news agent, who had refused to pay uuder the pretest that the Sunday laws made the claim Invalid. Judge Rentoul heid that the Sunday papers did not eotue under the head of "works of necessity." but as tne sunday act referred only to contracts entered into by a "tradesman, artilicer. workman or laborer." the proprietors of Lloyds' Weekly, as manufacturers, were exempt from the accusation of Illegality and were entitled to their money. Catarrh of the Pelvic Organs is a Frequent Cause of Barrenness. Pe-ru-na Eradicates Catar.h From the System. TO the woman of ancient Israel not to become a mother was regarded as the greatest of earthly calamities. To become a mother?more especially the mother of a strong, healthy boy?was the height of glory for the faithful woman of the good old Eible days. Even now, when maternity is not esteemed as of vote, the mother of healthy children is an object of admiration, and sometimes envy, by her neighbors. .As compared with ancient peoples, the average American woman has a low appreciation of motherhood. There are. however, a great many exceptions to this statement. The accompanying letters from grateful women who have been made strong, healthy and happy mothers need no added words of ours to make them convincing.
