We were pleased to receive a
visit last Friday from our esteemed
friend, Mr Daniel Z Martin, who
live> near Trio. Mr Martin is an
extensive reader and keeps well informed
on events past and present
so that it is interesting and profitable
to listen to his conversation.
David Mack, colored, was arrestnd
at Taft and committed to jail
here yesterday. When arrested
Mack had a shackle fastened to one
of his legs. He admits being a
convict and says he escaped from
the ehaingang at Walterhoro en
April 23. Tbp authorities there
have heen notified but no reply has
yet been received.
The April 'Criterion," the Columbia
Female College Magazine, is on
our desk. One of the most credi
table articles among it* contents is
a poem l?v Miss (Rsie Kpps, '(X1, of
this county, entitled "To the Hird
on My Hat." Mis* Kvh Rushtoa
of Lake City, class of 'P3, also contributes
a very readable article on
"Hymns and Hymn Writers."
A Fi?h Story.
The following incident sounds decidedly
"fishy", yet it is vouched for
as a fact by eye-witnesses of unimpeachable
veracity:
Last Monday Mr Sam Strong,
who assists in supplying the local

of Black river, came to town with
several strings of fish, among which
was one string of catfish. Just at
the entrance of the court house a
gentleman purchased four strings of
fiat fish and gave Mr Strong four
quarter in silver. In effecting the
exchange some of the coins dropped
from Mr Strong's hand and it was
thought that they had fallen to the
ground. Diligent search failed to
discover two of the coins and after
looking every where else Mr Strong
decided that they must have been
swallowed by one of the catfish on
on the string in his hand. He ac
cordingly proceeded to perform an
operation for appendicitis on one
of the largest of the cats and in its
maw, closely wedged together, he
found the two missing coins as
sound as a dollar and still worth
their face value.

Graham's tobacco warehouse on the ^
South-west corner of Dansing and ^
Church streets. A good deal of the

material is on the ground and the u
framing is going up. The building, | v
we understand, will he about seventylive
by one hundred and fifty feet,
which will make it the largest ware- a
house in town. On the ltoor of such a
a house big sales can be made. n
This will make our third tobacco
warehouse. Mr Graham is an ener- ^
getic and go-ahead man and we a
sincerely wish for him a large ^
measure of success in the undertaking.

after getting home that they

Mr McKenzie will be missed, not
nly by his devoted familv, but by

honest and trustworthy, he
