and the practical joker and his vic'
tirn were constantly in evidence. Mr
Epps, the cashier of the bank, was
somewhat annoyed by business men
coming to see about imaginary drafts

was told that there was a wagon load

mored the joke and the seeker after
fish had gone almost the length of

The strawberry season is upon us,
and a remarkably early one it is.
Dr Durant has won the distinction |
of not only making the first shipment
of this season but'of breaking
all previous records as to the date.
He sent off the first on Tuesday,
March 25. The earliest record up
to this season was April 18th. Dr
Durant beats this by twenty four
days. Jt is tine that he had only a
very few baskets but it was a genuine
shipment and the first shipments
are invariably small. The cold snap
of last week checked development
for a few days but the liernes are
now ripening rapidly and the crop
movement will be under full and
I rapid Way within a few days. Bar
ring unexpected cold and accident
the crop will be a big one-far exceeding
anything ever known in our
market. The acreage is about double
that of last year and the average
yield is expected to exceed previous
outputs. Crates and baskets are
coming in bv the car load. Things
are>rapidly shaping for the rush.
Messrs Singletary have been shipping
lettuce several days and in
good quantities. They made a good
crop and are realizing fair prices.
The truckers' peas arc blooming
right along and in some fields the
pods are forming. Therefore, basket
upon basket of this delicious vegetable
will soon be moving to less
favored climfes to tickle the palate
of those who will revel in the enjoyment
of our crystalized sunshine.
In all the world there is no better
land than South Carolina, and in all
South Carolina there is no better
spot than our clear old Willihmsburg.
Before our eountv lies a future that
would transfix us with astonishment
could we but come back to
look upon her one hundred years from
now, yea, fifty, twenty five, ten years
