forging to the front. For some

several of our leadiug business men
bare been working up an oil mill
with'the result that last week, before
we went to press, enough capital
had been subscribed or was
available to build and e<] uip a twenty
ton cotton oil mill* and a modem

of such an enterprise to oar town
and county. Year after year enough
cotfon seed has been shipped oat of
the onanty and bought again by the
farmers in the shape of meal and

fair dividend on the capital invested
\ ' in an oil mill. In addition to this
ft will bring the consumer and the
producer together and keep at home
thousands of dollars that have gone
elsewhere* to help build up other
towns and counties.

that it may be completed and the

Boy" indicates a sad lack of
knowledge on this most important
subject.

cut without satisfactory information
as to the significance of its design.

is without any conditions except
that the writer must he under sixteen
years of age and the papers
should not exceed two hundred
words in length. The prize essay
will be published in The Record
and also the four next best in their
order of merit according to our
judgment, should as many as five
papers be submitted.
Public Opinion Approves.

Tillman through his counsel public
opinion is pronounced in approval
of Chief Justice Y J Pope. The
hearing, which was continued from
Newberry, took place in Columbia
last Thursday and numerous affidavits
were introduced to show, on the
one hand, that the killing of Editor
Gonzales was done in cold blood and
with malice; and on the other hand,
that Tillman acted in self-defense,
believing that his life was in jeopardy.
Under the law and the evidence
it is generally agreed that Tillman
could not have been admitted to bail;
yet there were many who freely predicted
that bail would be granted.
In this case the newly elected Chief
Justice had au opportunity to rise
above partizan feeling and he has
shown himself equal to the occasion.
The ruling of the Chief Justice
does not imply that Tillman will
be found guilty of murder; that is a
question for the jury to decide. Jt
