years ago this great move, contemporaneous
with the equally
great question of forestry, dawned
upon this nation in its proper
light, and today there are in the
United States proper many thousand
miles ot Telford and Macadam
roads equal to any of the best in
France,* and it is to this end that
we learn the force ol the truth
uthe history of roads is the history
ot civilization.*' Congress
has been so thoughtful as to have
established und-r the Department
of Agriculture at Washington
a special ollice (Office of
Public Kuad Inquiry) for the (lis
semi nation of information concerning;
good roads and their construction,
This office is maintained
si an annual cost of about
115000 and is composed of six
officers and an indefinite number
of assistants and aids with director
Martin Dodge at its head. These
lacts are already too well known
to need any further mention; hut
verilr it is as great a fact that the
time is coming and now is when
even the remotest parts of-AngloSaxon
civilization must throw oil*

country, and still the good work
goes on.
One of the best institutions of
its kind (and, in fact. I he only one
of its kind in America) s
Briarcliff Manor on the Hudson,

New York, ami the success if this
grand pioneer in ihe application of
science on so extensive scale 1*
due to its motto: "Nothing is good
enough but the best," and that
is to get the best one must give
the most. Among the getting*
of this farm, it has got a replete
portion of the good roads of that
progressive 6tafe.
The office of road inquiry at
Washington has even gone so far
as to send out men who will give
practical instruction in road
building to any group sufficient l>
interested as well as to conduct
the building ot roads in person.
Such a work is too patriotic as
well at too philanthropic to be
treated as the people of South
Carolina hive done.
Now that the matter has been
mentioned through the columns of
Thb Krcord and as its worthy
editor promises an editorial at an
early date upon this subject it is
presumed that there has arisen
gome enthusiasm and maybe, a
spark of enterprise, which I hope
will grow to a great flame,?I
trust there will be some results
towards the proper ends. There
is no use to run to the tax book 01

under far more unfavorable conditions;

1 had thought of adding some
statistics on road building in lhi>
country during the decade, but
finding that this article is already
too long, I shall relegate this to
the pen of some one who can treat
of it more efficiently than I, per
Imps. 1 he editor, Mr Wolfe, will
doubtless touch upon this matter
in his editorial, and in closing, 1
shall say that this article, brief as
it is, will have served me adequately
it it in anyway incites a
better feeling towards the g< o I
roads movement. Of course it
must be borne in mind that Macadam
roadn will cost anywhere
liom $2000 to $5000 per mile and
consequently the county of Williamsburg
is in no condition to
commence upon these, but pood
roads, which are as serviceable loi
the present as any, are com pre
bended by this ravine; "Labor
omnia vincit" of the great road
builders of the middle apes.
