U THURSDAY. JANUARY 29.1903. yfoBgggu^~g?gB;5: J. i .JL,The Hampton Monument. Elsewhere in this issue appears a notice fr>m C-apt John A Kelley, chairmai of the committee appointed last May to assist in raising funds for erecting a monument to Gen Wade Hiunpton. the anniversary of whose death was brought to mind so forcibly by by the eloquent tribute paid to his memory in the house of of reprewentativbs last week by his old comrade in arms, Gen Matthew C Butler. At the county Democratic con, vention held last May there were passed resolutions of love and respect to South Carolina's warrior-states* ^ 'a? i_.: man, fona ueee rajuiunvue *wc responded to in glowing and touching tributes to bis memory in several Speeches of stirring eloquence. At . that same meeting a committee was appointed, consisting of the executive committeemen from the several Democratic clubs, with Capt Kelley as ehairn.au. This committee was expected to devise means, each in his community, for raising fnnds which were to be forwarded frbm this county to the central committee in Columbia. Now we learn that only one member of the committee has up to ftTm? fnrnAri in nollprtinns to be applied to tbe monument fund. * This seeming neglect, we feel suie, has been unintentional, being rather due to procrastination, that arch thief of time which steals away so many golden opportunities. Now that their attention has been brought the matter we hope and believe that old 'Williamsburg, where dwell so many friends and admirers of the gallant Hampton, will not allow it to go on record that she has shirked her duty toward an undertaking whereby his deeds of noble achievement are sought to be commemorated. If the committee fail in its duty after Wa anno*] tlien fho rennlnt.ions passed and the speeches delivered last May were mere idle compliment and oar sentiments of patriotism are as shadowy as the baseless fabric of a dream. We cannot Conclude this appeal more appropriately than by quoting this sentiment from the admirable . letter of oar able Columbia correspondent, fHon W L Bass: "'The greatest quality of a truly great people is shown in their respect and honor for their heroes." ?? i . j tie wno Keeps tne puwuer uj passion in his heart must not be surprised if there is an explosion. Doctrines found by dissection necessitate the death of truth. What is a gate to imprisonment on this side will prove the door of release on the other.
