' 11611 MI r H?N J DAVIS CARTER'S TESTIMONY AS TO FARMING. r A Few Timely Hir.ts as to How to make Farming Pay?Let us Hear from Others. Editor County Record:? In a recent issue oJ Thk Rfajokd some mention was maue 01 m> u?bacc. crop, and as there are some, inaccuracies in the report I will give you a few facts about my farm for publication. First, I will say that on a four-horse farm my outlay in manuring labor and all i other expenses, including some ditching and slump-digging and the gathering ot my crop has been about $1150, all told. On IS acres of tobacco I sold in my warehouse, ungraded, the proluct lor bailiff about 4177 39 YVavv v ? ? ? o per acre. I am net quite through picking cotton yet, but will get about one bale per acre. Have made more corn than ever before in one crop, also a fine crop of hav. peas, etc. Now. Mr Editor, I want to say this. Farming has been considered by nanv to be unprotitable, bat I have always made a profii from it; and I think the biggest mistake made by many farmers is J that they try to make a crop be^^oj^their lands are in condition for it. Bfefore a planter shojld make much cf an out'av in the way way of fertilizing lie should thoroughly drain his land, then r,nDr> anrl mv wrird tnr it I he O let p 1!) MIIV* yield will be doubled. Why it's surprising how much better condition your plow team will keep in during work season when the stumps are out ol' the land, also there is quite a saving in the breakage of plows, chain**, etc. Beside you have all the light, wood you need (ol the very best quality) to burn during the winter, and in addition to all this von destroy that pe.it so much complained of, the ground mole. Now, Mr Editor, away with this notion Hut farming doesn't pay! I have made between 400 and $00 per cent on my investment this year and am planning to bea* that next year. Well, I am going to put up my cats with a grain drill. Would like to near from some of my brother farmers who have used this machine as to the amount of seed to put in per acre to obtain the best results; also as to how land should be prepared for seeding. I shall give you the result of this crop of oats it I live to make ami gather and them. 1 hope, Mr Editor, I will provoke some o'her larmirs to give us their ideas, methods, etc., conr ?-? ci 1.1 .u:? ..?? ceming laruung. ouuuiu uos uui find the way to the waste basket I may write more some day, Very truly yours, J. Powell jumped on an inverted rake made of ten penny nails, and thrust one nail entirely through her foot and a second one half way through. Chamberlain's Pain Balm was promptly applied and live minutes later the pain 1iad disappeared and no more suffering was experieneed. In three days the ehild was wearing her shoe as usual and with absolutely no discomfort. Mi Powell is a well known merchant of Forkland, Ya. Pain Balm is an ananti septic and heals such injuries without maturation and in one-third the time required by the usual treatment. For Ale by Dr. lb C.
