was in flames. When the crowd
fathered the tire had gained too

attention was turned to saving the

have been destroyed. As it was by
.hard work the fire was confined to
r the burning barn. Mr. Alsbrook

A Disastrous Fire in Florence.
. '
At 2:30 o'clock this morning it
was reported by telephone that a
$30,000 fire occurred at Florence.
* Nearly a block was destroyed id the
' central part of the city, comprising
the Dixie Tobacco warehouse and
the Pee Dee Tobacco warehouse and
several intermediate wooden huildings.
The tire was not under control
at 2:40 a. m. The fire having
commenced at 1:15
Origin thought to be the work of
incendiaries.?TheState, Nov 3.
Among those who lost in the fire
we understand there were several tobacco
growers from this county who
had their tobacco stored in the m are-;
houses that was destroyed.
Mail Train Wrecked.

through mail train on the Atlantic
Coast Line railroad crashed into a
freight train which was taking the

school has settled down to very good
work. Still here and there is found
a boy or a girl who does not realize
the golden opportunities of youth,
and is prone to fritter away his other
tithe. We cannot urge upon parents
too much the necessity of
"home study,'' in order that the hest
in a child may be reached for development.
.Unless parents regard
sehool-going and l?*s<on-getting in a
serious light and communicate tha* i

work for teachers is augmented, and
the possible growth of the children
is lessened.
Ofconrse, many good excuses are
rendered for a child's absence, yet
we trust no parent will allow a
child's plea of indisposition to harpj

The school had the pleasure of attending
a Hallow e'en party Friday
night, Oct. 31, at the court house,
and all the pupils enjoyed it very
much.
Mecca Coojxt was absent Tuesday
on account of sickness.
No one from our school took in
the fair last week.
We hate only one recess, from
twelve to twelve-thirty. The child
ren's main games are "whip-lash"
and marbles. If any of us miss our
lessons we have to stay in during re
cess or until we. leurn tnem. some
times some of them do not get much
of a recess.
Eunice Harper was absent all of
last week and a part of the week before
011 account of sickness.
There was some talk amoug the
children of having a picnic last Friday
afternoon, but I don't think they
had it as one of the leading promoters
of the outing was sick.
Louise Harper, of the 9th grade,
has been forced to stop school temporarily
on account of ill health.
