matters. This depaitment will l>e
in charge of Prof. Wiggins and will!
contain educational notes of interest
* to the public concerning the school
f / or touching educational advancement
in general.
f We feel sure that Prof. Wiggins
will make this an attractive feature
of the paper and we hope that his
efforts will be appreciated.
A Live Subject,
m While we are still on the live sub-1
Hkje't of the attainment of better
Ehchool facilities consequent to the
marked grow: h of our town school,
Flit may be in order to point out some
jlsalient results which are bound to
h accrue from the erection of a niodRern
bnilding.
| First, Kingstree is peculiarly well
fBiuiareu ior trie esiiimisuim-m ui uuei
of the best high schools in the State.
It is the center of a large area of
. territory, which has 110 institution of
learning at all to supply the gaps
between the curricula of the rural
schools and the colleges. In a large
field, extending from Florence on
the north to Charleston on the south,
touching Clarendon on the west and
including the whole of Williamsburg
on t^ie east, we have not a single
high school to fully prepare hoys
and girls for college classes, as they
should be prepared. We cannot
"pclraw extensively from this large area
now because we are not prepared to
accommodate outside patronage to
any great extent; and we cannot offer
- - the potent advantages that other
schools abroad are offering until we
have a building that can accommodate
the increased patronage. As it is
we find our boys and girls migrating
to foreign fields to prepare for college
work.
E& The old cry that we derive no material
benefit from such an enterprise
v can no longer find lodgment in the
mind of any person with ordinary
business discernment. It is a well
p known fact that where good schools
are found business of every kind is
largely benefited thereby. We assert,
with definite instances in mind,
that a good school does more to increase
the commercial importance of
i; a town than any other single agency,
save the wide-spread influence of the
gospel. A parent knows that where
his child spends his school year,
there his thoughts are centered with
a peculiar and marked interest.
Then the more hearts and minds
that can bb centered upon our town
the greater will be the influx of
business patronage. Here comes in
the missiou of a model school.
Those who may at the first blush
, feel inclined to oppose the steps that
are bound to be taken soon to build
a house wherein the children's interest?nay
even their lives?find an
absorbing center surelv will not per
mit prejudice or personal feeling
deflect their better judgment from
what their inmost impulses declare
to be a crying need.
. are by nature the center of a
large territory, which (we know to
t be a fact) prominent educators have
expressed the opinion as being the
very place for the centralizing and
vitalizing of a tremendous educational
possibility. We must have
. this building. It is out of the question
to say that the benefit will not
warrant the outlay. We know it
will. Let us not figure on schemes
to jab the knife of personal feeling
into the living body of such an educational
creation as may be ours for
the asking. Let each one of us lend
bis shoulder to push the wheel of
; progressto its most rapid whirl.
^Give us the building, citizens, and it
will give back to you more business,
better citizens anil a broader > general
intelligence.
