On Saturday ot last week a
base ball picnic was given in the
beautiful grove near Mrs. J. C.
AlcCutcheirs residence, and in tne i
afternoon there was a match game}
between the Black River and the
Dauntless clubs. Before the sun
had pursued far his morning career
a large crowd had assembled ?n
(he grounds, including a fair proportion
ol charming young ladies.
The morning was pleasantly passed
with games and other social diver,
sions dear to youthful hearts, until
about 1 o'clock, when dinner
was announced. That scene
would require a more lacile pen
than the writer's to describe.
Suffice it to say that the spread
included the most dainty, delicious
and sumptuous viands that
won Id gladden the hearts and stay
the appetite of an epicure. The
young ladies are entitled to special
thanks tor their kindness in waiting
on the table.
The dinner over, the boys and
girls just naturally paired ofl,
many of them taking seats in
convenient buggies in sequestered
spots, where topics of more or
less interest were discussed. Not
long after dinner the contesting
teams went over to the diamond,
and very soon tiie game commenced.
Both clubs had friends
among the spectators, and when
good playing was done on either
side it was applnded.
k A<?ain. it is inv duty?but not a
V sad one?to report a defeat for
f (be Dauntless club. While the
f game was not without interesting
features, the teams were too unevenly
matched for it to be excit
ing. As luipire, Mr. J. D. Frierson,
was eminently fair and satisfactory
to both sides.
Score by innings:
Black River, 3 1 0 6 2 0 6 2 2-22
Dauntless, 2 0 2 0 1 0 4 0 0-9
After the game the crowd enjoyed
seveial excellent selections
of popular music, rendered on the
organ and violin at the hospitable
home of Mrs. ICobert fcpps.
