Ancient und Modern Enthusiasts Are
Much Alike.
It is not generally thought that golf
is a dangerous game, though now and
then a fore caddy is picked oil, and
(wanderers on the links often think
ithey are in danger of their lives. But
if not in itself risky to life and limb,
golf is a game for the sake oT which I
its devotees have run immense risks.
In this respect perhaps no other game
can compare with it, and only wild
isarae shooting among sports. The m- i
tldental dangers are suggested by a
writer in Golf, who has heard of the
golfing of some Scotch soldiers in Africa.
They acquired some clubs from
some quite unknown quarter, and used
to ride over to Maseru to play the
tame, in spite of the numerous snipers
tn the locality. The enthusiasm was
more remarkable as it was necessary
to carry around a gun as well as tho
clubs. But the riskiness of the amusements
is nothing to the dangers faced
by their Scots ancestors in the Highlands
A man with half n iln'Pi hlnrvl
feuds, so it is asserted, would journey
down to the links, dispense his small
band of followers as scouts on the
hills, take off his hauberk, and drive
his ball furiously till the first note of
warning. Whether the tale is strictly
historical may be doubted by preciso
historians; but the garac is old enough
to justify the writer, and it is fair to
argue that if Scotsmen and Englishmen
to-day carry their golf clubs to
the seat of war and play in the presence
of snipers, the ancient hero showed
no less courage in the pursuit of
his favorite pastime.?London Globe.

Indianapolis, Special.?For Seerei
tary of State, Albert Sehoonover, of
Attica: Attorney General. W. E. Stil|
well, of Princeton; State Auditor,
i James R. I'.iggs, of Sullivan; State
Treasurer, Jerome Herff. of Peru.
The above ticket, and a number of
i candidates for minor oiTiees, were
1 nominated at the Democratic State ;
convention which was held here ;
Wednesday.
The gathering was remarkable for
its lack of discord, candidates for all
but three of the offices being chosen
by acclamation. The only contest on
j the floor of the convention was for
j the office of Secretary of State. While
there was no fight in the convention
proper, that was a battle royal in the
meeting of the committee.
The friends of Wm. J. Bryan, from
I the second district, were very earnestly
in favor of the insertion in the
platform of a plank endorsing him
and the Kansas City platform. The |
majority of the committee was against !
anv such endorsement, saying they |
considered it out of place at the pres- ;
ent time to inject Mr. Bryan's name i
into the State campaign. The fight 1
lasted well into the night and it was '
nearly noon today before the report |
of the committee was ready for presentation
to the convention. The 1
plank also created much discussion, ;
the committee being called upon to
consider all sorts of opinions in be- '
half of the Filipinos, some of them
being in favor of immediate and complete
independence.

were present to protect the bride and ,

to maintain order. The women
rushed by and around them close to
the wedding party and gave vent to
their feelings in no uncertain manner. '

Negro Teamsters Injured.
Chicago, Special.?A pitched battle
occurred between a crowd of negroes,
imported from St. Louis, to take the
places of the striking stockyards teamsters
and toughs and strikers at Fortyfifth
street and Center avenue early
Wednesday in which six negroes were
badly injured, two possibily mortally.
The men were driving wagons when
they were attacked. Many of their assailants
were armed with ice pike poles
they had seized from ice wagons and in
the fight the negroes were lacerated by
these weapons. One man had his thigh
broken and ancther was injured internally.
Southern Education Board.
In a graphic account of the educational
conference held at Athens, Ga.,
last month, John S. Cohen, staff correspondent
of the Atlanta Journal,
says:
Reduced to its last analysis, this
Southern Educational Conference, the
coming of Mr. Ogden and his party,
simply means that in the future the
money expennea in i.ne suum nuw uuc- |
side sources for the education of whites
and blacks will not be expended by
generous but misguided philanthropists
but by practical and thoughtful men in
the manner devised py Southern minds
and through agencies guided by Southern
hands.
Nothing could be manlier or finer
than the attitude of these Northern
men of means here today.
As one of them expressed it:
"You have shown us that the South
is trying heroically to deal not only
with the negro, but with great unprivileged
masses of its white population.
You understand your own people and
your own problems as wc do not. This
work is. therefore, yours. Take it and
do it. In so far as we can help you, we
are at your service. We have no desire
to middle or interfere. If you will
take the helm we will stand by you,
not as Northerners but as fellow-citixens
of a common country."
A nobler spirit could not be breathed
into language and none need not doubt
that this correctly characterizes the
aims and motives of ail these men. It
is neither charity nor pity that they offer,
but fraternity and patriotism, and
I much mistake the temper of the people
of the South if they do not accept
It as such.
In proof that these are not simply
fine words these men of mind and
means have put their woik largely in
the hands of Southern men?not unpractical.
idlo dreamers, but those noble
spirits who unaided have been battling
for the education of the poorer
clases of the South these many years,
with limited means and oftentimes, sad
to say. small appreciation.
An educated man is a wealth producer,
an uneducated man is merely a day
laborer. One has his brains to assist
the skill of his hands, and the two together?brains
and skill?is a combination
which has made nations wealthy
and powerful. The laborer has only
the power of hi* muscles, and that limits
the product of the work.?S. G.
