the attention of every visitor. The
buck shed his antlers a short time
ago and it is wonderful with what rapidity
the new ones are growing. They

The dross parades in the afternoons
offer a diversion which is pleasing to
thousands. There is something about
military manoeuvres which attracts
everybody end it does not require a
trained eye to see that the marines are
soldiers of a superb order. In their
dress parades the marines march to
music by the Artillery band. The
band has been engaged for two concerts
daily until the close of the
month. The marines are now commanded
by Capt. Butler who got shot
in the neck in China.
The weather was the subject of some
concern yesterday, but a delightful
change has <ome today. The bre-'/.es
which the tides bring temper the sunshine
most wonderfully. The month of
May promises to be ideal so far as the
* weather is concerned.
THE SILK EXHIBIT.
Mr. Paul .Moore, who is in charge is
Spartanburg's splendid exhibit. is
proud of his silk exhibit. He brought
down a dozen coioons attached to
leaves on an ordinary plum bush.
These cocoons are beginning to open
and butterflies of the most gorgcrous
hues are coming forth from the cocoons
in which the ugly ihrysaEdes
hail ensconsced themselves. Miss H? nrietta
Aiken Kelly, who is much interested
in silk culture, having given eight
years to its study, is today putting up
a ppienc.ta cxa'.u:t in me soutn caiolina
building.
The exhibit of kadlins from this
State is a matter of much interest.
These clays are as white as snow and
absolutely free from grit. There is on
exhibit a lot of pottery made from this
clay, and the display of tiro brick from
aFirficld and of vitrified brick from
Pickens is also very much admired.
The churches of Charleston are open
to all visitors. Last night four of the
members of the Esquimau family at
the exposition grounds came into the
city and presented themselves at the
door of one of the most fashionable or
the city churches. These strangers
from the north were given a welcome
with which they appeared to ne greatly
pleased. The Esquimaux have two peculiarities
of drpss. One is that they
wear no head gear, and the other peculiar:
tv s that the bells cannot be
distinguished from the beaux.
There is in Columbia an organisation,

Man In a Street Car.
People are so busy nowadays they
1 have often not time to be polite, and a
considerate act at oiue attracts attention.
There was such an occurrence
a few days ago in a 4th avenue car.
Among the passengers was a blind
negro. His clothes were the veriest ;
rags and were held to his emaciated i
frame with nieces of wire and bits of i
string. A broom handle served as a
cane. Over one shoulder was suspended
a gunny sack, giving hiia the ap
pearance of a cotton picker.
He continually picked at one hand
with the Angers of the other, as
though he wore playing the banjo,
humming softly to himself the while
and patting his foot. As 1m face was
