in order to be on hand promptly
Monday morning.
Judge Charles G. Dantzlor, of the
1st Circuit, who was recently elected
to succeed Judire Kcnet, seems
to "be entirely conversant with hisl
duties and has made a most favorable
impression here. His charge
to the grand jury was terse, dear
cut and- practical, and his ruiings
have been fair and impartial
throughout. The business before)
the court has been transacted with
all possible dispatch and a number)
of eases are already disposed of. j
The grand jury, having completed
its duties for the term, was dis- j
eha-ged yesterday morning.
Following are the cases which up
to this time have engaged theattention
of the court:
The State vs. William Richardson,
alias Coker Richardson, bur,
ffiary and larceny. Verdict,
guilty and received a sentence of i
six years in the penitentiary. The
same defendant pled gu.lty to |
another indictment for housebreak-J
ing and larceny and was sentenced
to one year on chaiugang, the second
sentence to take effect after the
expiration of the first.
The Mate vs. Oliver B. Wilson,
larceny of livestock. Guilty and
sentenced to one year on chaiugang.
LeRoy Lee, Esu., was the counsel
for defeadaut in this case.
The State vs. Larry Dick, housebreaking
and larceny. Verdict,
guilty, and sentenced to one year
< on phaingang.
The State vs. Harrison Davis and
Tom Davis. Jr., housebreaking and
larceny. Doth the defendants pled
guilty and were sentenced, the for-1
mer to three months and the latter I
to six mdnths on chaingang.

The State vs. Arthur Fulton, housebreaking
and larceny. Defendant
pled guilty and sentenced to six
months on public works of county.
The State vs. John Red Springs,
assault with intent to ravish. .Not
guilty. Leltoy Lee, Esq., reprerented
the defendant.
The State vs. Watson Harper,
housebreaking and larceny. De-J
fendant entered plea of guilty and
received a sentence of one year on
the public works of county. In this
case the defendant was arraigned
before Magistrate Stutts on Tuesday.
The case was sent to the
higher court and the defendant's
trial, conviction and sentence all
took place on the same day.
As we go to press the trial of
Mason Davis Nesmith for the killing
of Eli Sauls at Cades, S. O., on
the afternoon of February 7, 1W)L\
is in progress. The jury has been
drawn. Messrs J. iM. Johnson 01
Marion and LeRoy Lee, Ksq., are
assisting the prosecution ana the
defendant is represented by Judge
J. H. Hudson,of Bennettsville, and
John A. Kelley, Esq. It is probable
that this ease will not be eoneluded
until this evening.
A true bill was returned by the
grand jury Wednesday against
Peter Jordan for burning an unfinished
building.

Charleston, 8. O., on Thursday,

services. Mr Rogerson was a
widower and lelt seven children?(

was a man of sterling integrity i
and bore a high character in the
community in which he lived all
Jus life. His funeral was attended
by almost everyone for miles'
around and there were many
hearts that sympathized with the
bereaved relatives and friends.

which Johnsonville is so justly celebrated,
and Mr. E. J. Davis, a rising
